What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Subaru Outback?

At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, prior damage, and whether the car’s safety and convenience features are functioning as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5i comes with basic 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, but it does include a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchscreen interface for the climate control and audio systems, and a roof rack with crossbars. The 2.5i Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, fog lamps and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The 2.5i Limited adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights that point in the direction you’re steering, a blind-spot detection system, a rear cross-traffic detection system, and lane-change assist technology. The 3.6R Limited adds a 6-cylinder engine and Xenon headlamps.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 175 hp and uses a CVT, while the 3.6R brings a more powerful 256-hp 6-cylinder option. The 2.5i is efficient enough for the class, but acceleration can feel modest.
• Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two cameras to monitor the road ahead, warn you of danger, and brake the car to a full stop if needed. It is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels. The Rear Vehicle Detection System, which includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change assist, is optional on Premium models and standard on Limited models.
• Infotainment: The Starlink interface includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, hands-free calling, music streaming, mobile apps, and CD playback. The available navigation system uses a 7-inch touchscreen and supports swipe and pinch gestures.
• Fuel efficiency: The Outback is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, and the expert evaluation notes that real-world fuel economy can fall short of expectations.

Which 2015 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2015 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the value play if you want the Outback’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the rear-view camera, Bluetooth, touchscreen climate/audio controls, and roof rails, so it covers the basics well.
• 2.5i Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lamps, alloy wheels, and dual-zone climate control without jumping all the way to the top.
• 2.5i Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete feature set in the 2.5-liter lineup. It adds the power liftgate, heated rear seats, active fog lights, and the key safety upgrades, making it the most well-rounded choice.
• 3.6R Limited: Choose this if you want the stronger 6-cylinder engine and don’t mind paying for it. It keeps the Limited’s equipment and adds Xenon headlamps, but the content points to the 2.5i Limited as the better all-around value for most buyers.

EyeSight is optional on Premium and Limited trim levels, and the Rear Vehicle Detection System is standard on Limited models.

What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $10,772 sits slightly below last year's $11,362.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move a used Outback quickly. Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2015 if:

• 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Redesigned for 2015, it’s bigger, more refined, and still keeps standard all-wheel drive.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,297, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $10,772 average.
• It’s aimed at active owners who want more space and versatility for passengers and cargo.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2015 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and broad market availability. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2016 is the secondary path to consider.

How does the 2015 Subaru Outback compare to the 2015 Toyota RAV4?

Our experts score the 2015 Subaru Outback 8.2/10 and the 2015 Toyota RAV4 7.3/10. The Outback stands out for its standard all-wheel drive, stronger safety story, and more wagon-like utility. The RAV4 is cheaper to start, but the Outback offers a lower average used price and a higher expert score. If you want a practical crossover with a stronger emphasis on safety and all-weather confidence, the Outback is the better fit.
