Get your 2015 Land Rover LR2 as soon as it arrives in dealer showrooms, because after this year, it’s history! That’s right—for better or worse, this compact 5-seat luxury crossover is slated to be replaced by the debuting Discovery Sport, offering a new 9-speed auto-manual transmission and some ultra-futuristic bells and whistles. But for now, the 2015 LR2, known as the Freelander outside the U.S., returns for its swan-song year with all its numerous bangles and baubles intact.

Again, 3 trims—Base, HSE and HSE LUX—comprise the LR2 lineup for the upcoming year, with all iterations delivered with standard 4-wheel drive (4WD) to once more give this little Rover its traditional off-road prowess. Actually, it’s an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system sporting Land Rover’s Terrain Response technology, featuring driver-selectable modes to adjust engine torque and braking to particular types of terrain and conditions, while throwing in descent control to complement an altitudinous ride height.

Anyhow, look for 59 cubic feet of cargo area (with the rear seatbacks folded) to return in 2015, along with some hefty front-seat comfort. The rear seats? Well, let’s say they can be a snug fit for anyone over 5-and-a-half-feet tall. But back-seat buckaroos do get to enjoy available rear-seat DVD entertainment, while the whole gang can revel in the classy leather, wood and simulated alloy cabin accents.

Outside, meantime, the latest LR2 iterations offer standard 18-inch alloy wheels, heated power-adjustable mirrors and a rear spoiler, with the cabin swaddling everyone in leather upholstery as they lounge amid full power accessories. Drivers will again enjoy standard cruise control, telescoping tilt-wheel steering and a 4.2-inch driver information display, along with rear parking sensors and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror as they phone home with standard Bluetooth hands-free calling. Entertainment, meanwhile, is again provided via a 380-watt system boasting a single-CD player, 11 speakers and an auxiliary audio input (USB port), all interfaced with a 7-inch touchscreen.

Furthermore, the LR2 HSE adds reverse-tilt outside mirrors with integrated approach lamps, memory for driver’s settings, a rear-view camera and a remote garage door opener to all that, while the HSE LUX tacks on upgraded leather upholstery and a 17-speaker Meridian premium Surround Sound system.

As for additional options, look for the upcoming year’s LR2 to remain available with HDD navigation and a power sunroof, not to mention heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a somewhat controversial heated windshield, as well as satellite radio, 19-inch alloy wheels and a veritable cornucopia of available interior and exterior accent and color choices. Keep in mind, however, that certain of these extracurricular goodies are in package form, thus adding a hefty surcharge to the LR2's otherwise quite manageable MSRP.

In keeping with tradition, the 2015 LR2 lineup again sports the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder powerplant and 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission that debuted in 2013. Look for 240 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque from this turbo 4, with mileage estimated at 17 mpg city/24 highway and towing maxed out at 3,500 pounds with the proper equipment.

Finally, standard safety features include 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction control and off-road-adaptable stability control, front side-mounted airbags and front head restraint whiplash protection, along with front and rear head airbags and a driver’s-side knee airbag. Daytime running lights are delivered throughout the lineup, while the 2015 HSE and HSE LUX both come with standard LED high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights and daytime running lights.
