CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Volkswagen Beetle

Summary
With 418 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,884.00, 32.5% of 2014 Volkswagen Beetles for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle 4.4 / 5 stars.
50.5% of 2014 Beetle models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends retro charm with a more modern, coupe-like shape and a roomier cabin than the earlier “new” Beetle. It is front-engined and front-wheel drive, and compared with the first modern Beetle it is noticeably longer and wider, a fraction lower, and has significantly more trunk space. That makes it more usable than its styling might suggest, while still keeping the familiar Beetle personality that gives it so much appeal.
For 2014, the Beetle also gained some meaningful hardware and lineup changes. Independent rear suspension became standard across the range, the Beetle Convertible joined the lineup, and the Beetle Turbo was renamed Beetle R-Line while its 2.0-liter engine gained an extra 10 horsepower. Buyers could still choose between the 2.5-liter five-cylinder gas engine with 170 horsepower and the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower, and the latter came with a six-speed manual as standard or a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission as an option. That mix of character, available performance, and added refinement helps explain why the car remains appealing.
The Beetle’s strengths are not limited to style. It feels well made and has a premium ambience inside, and the 2011-2019 models are described as well-equipped. At the same time, it is not especially practical, visibility isn’t great, and its reliability record is not a standout. For shoppers who value personality and a distinctive design over maximum utility, the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle offers a compelling balance of charm, equipment, and everyday usability.

How much does the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,771 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,620.86 |
| Year-Round High | $12,827.01 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,274 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +4.05% |
Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 430 listings available, which gives you some room to compare options before you commit.
If you find a listing below $11,620.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Generally — the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle earns a 4.4/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, unique style, and easy parking, and many also like the spacious interior. That lines up well if you want a car with personality and everyday usability rather than maximum practicality. With 29.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe it as fun to drive and easy to live with, and those comments suggest a car that many owners feel good about keeping over time. At the same time, its reliability record is not a standout, so you should expect used-car ownership risk to depend heavily on maintenance history and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 50.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any past damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of inconsistent wear, since those can reveal how the car was treated. Because this model is more about style and character than maximum utility, you should also focus on overall condition inside and out.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Beetle?
Act selectively, because this market still favors sellers and the best listings can move quickly.
- Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 430 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 50.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,620.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $12,771 sits slightly above last year's $12,274.
That upward move suggests the Beetle has held buyer interest well enough to support pricing. If you buy carefully and keep the car in strong condition, you may be able to preserve more of its value than you would with a less distinctive model. The limited supply of clean, well-priced examples can also help future resale if you decide to sell into a market that still values the Beetle's style.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,039, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $12,771 average.
- It adds a more powerful TDI diesel with better fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2014 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction. If you are willing to spend more for the next year’s diesel efficiency and broader engine flexibility, the 2015 is the better secondary path.
