Is the 2014 Nissan Altima a good car?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is a practical choice if you want a comfortable, efficient midsize sedan that focuses on everyday usefulness rather than driving excitement. It earns a user rating of 3.83/5 and an expert rating of 7.83/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Only 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards shoppers who compare carefully.

Is the 2014 Nissan Altima reliable?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is presented as a cost-conscious sedan with mixed long-term dependability signals. The expert notes say it delivers excellent fuel economy, and the cost-effectiveness commentary says it should hold its value better than many midsize sedans.

Owner feedback points to a reliable, dependable, long-term-friendly ownership experience for many shoppers, but it also mentions some repair needs. The expert commentary adds that the CVT can be a durable-feeling part of the driving experience once you understand how it behaves, though it can drone under hard acceleration.

For used buyers, that means you should expect a sensible ownership proposition, but you should still budget for careful inspection and possible maintenance as mileage climbs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Nissan Altima?

At 46.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the car has been repaired after a collision.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5 trim is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add features like cruise control, a power driver’s seat, additional speakers, passive entry, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, leather seating, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
• Powertrain: The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is paired with a CVT and is tuned for efficiency, while the 3.5-liter V6 adds more power and quicker acceleration at the cost of fuel economy.
• Safety package: The Technology Package adds navigation, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV and SL trims. Base trims do not get those features.
• Infotainment: Most versions use NissanConnect Apps with a 5-inch touchscreen, while the navigation-equipped setup uses a larger 7-inch display.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.5 returns 31 mpg in combined driving, while the 3.5 returns 25 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2014 Nissan Altima trim should I buy?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is offered in 6 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV, 3.5 SL.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it adds useful everyday equipment like cruise control, a power driver’s seat, extra speakers, and passive entry. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Altima without giving up the basics.
• 2.5 SV: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds 17-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, NissanConnect Apps, and remote engine start. It gives you the most meaningful comfort and tech upgrades without jumping to luxury pricing.
• 2.5 SL: This trim is the comfort-focused choice, with leather seats, a Bose audio system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more upscale interior trim. It suits you if you want the most polished 2.5-liter version.
• 3.5 S: This is the choice if you want the V6, paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels. It is the performance-oriented pick in the lineup, though it trades away some efficiency.
• 3.5 SV: This trim combines the V6 with added convenience features like a power sunroof, fog lights, and a universal garage door opener. It is the better choice if you want the stronger engine and more equipment.
• 3.5 SL: This is the top trim, adding high-intensity discharge headlights to the 3.5 SL equipment set. It is the most fully equipped V6 version.

The Technology Package is available on SV and SL trims, and it adds navigation, Blind-Spot Warning, Lane-Departure Warning, and Moving-Object Detection.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Nissan Altima?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,469 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 46.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,551, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Nissan Altima's resale value?

The current average of $7,656 sits slightly below last year's $8,126.

That softer pricing suggests the Altima has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment. If you buy one now, you’re entering at a lower price point than last year, which can help cushion depreciation.

For a future seller, the key will be condition, mileage, and trim. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than rougher cars, especially if they have a clean history and strong maintenance records.

Is the 2014 Nissan Altima safe?

The 2014 Nissan Altima gets a 5-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is called a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Technology Package adds a navigation system, Moving-Object Detection, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane-Departure Warning on SV and SL trims. The Lane-Departure Warning system can be switched off, and the Blind-Spot Warning setup is described as less effective than it could be.

Should I buy a 2014 Nissan Altima or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 46.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.78% compared with last year.
• The 2014 stands out for being safe, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and affordable.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $8,171, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,656 average.
• It adds more responsive handling and a more engaging all-around character.

The bottom line: If you want the lower entry price and a practical, value-focused sedan, the 2014 is the better buy. If you can spend more for a newer Altima with sharper handling and a more rounded driving feel, the 2015 is the stronger upgrade. For price-sensitive shoppers, the 2014 remains the smarter starting point.
