Is the 2014 Dodge Durango a good car?

Generally — the 2014 Dodge Durango earns a 4.45/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise the spacious interior, comfort, and quality materials, and they also like the smooth operation of the Uconnect system. The Durango’s appeal is strongest if you want a roomy, refined SUV with a more upscale feel than its rugged image suggests. Is the 2014 Dodge Durango reliable?

Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, space, and the sense that it can be counted on for family duty. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression of durability and a composed driving experience, while also noting that the Durango feels rugged and impervious to rough roads.

The cost-of-ownership commentary adds a maintenance upside: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that reliability and repair costs can be less predictable than the cabin quality and driving experience suggest.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Dodge Durango?

At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, alignment, and wear patterns that could point to past damage or poor repairs. It also makes sense to focus on the condition of the engine, climate control, and electronics, since those are the areas that owners have flagged most often. If you’re comparing multiple listings, favor the cleanest example over the cheapest one.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SXT is the most stripped-down version, while the SXT Plus adds a 12-way power driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio. The Limited adds leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, dual USB charging ports, a 115-volt outlet, an upgraded sound system, remote engine start, a reversing camera, rear parking-assist sensors, and a universal garage door opener. The R/T adds a 5.7-liter V8, performance steering, a sport-tuned suspension, heavy-duty brakes, and 20-inch wheels. The Citadel adds premium leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, navigation, and extra chrome trim. The best-value trim is the Limited if you want the strongest mix of comfort and equipment.
• Powertrain: The Durango uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and it can also be equipped with a 5.7-liter V8. The V6 is described as smooth and capable, while the V8 adds more towing strength and a more muscular character.
• Safety package: Trailer Sway Control is standard for all 2014 Durango models. The Limited can be upgraded with rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection. That same blind-spot system is also available on the R/T and Citadel, bundled with Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation.
• Infotainment: The Durango can be equipped with an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen, and Uconnect Access adds traffic, weather, gas-station search, movie listings, sports scores, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and emergency calling. The system is described as easy to use, with responsive controls and a sensible layout.
• Fuel efficiency: The AWD test vehicle averaged 18.2 mpg, and the EPA estimate cited for that setup was 19 mpg. The Durango’s fuel economy is not a strong point, so efficiency-minded shoppers should keep that in mind.

Which 2014 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?

The 2014 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, SXT Plus, Limited, R/T, Citadel.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point, but it is the least equipped choice. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with a more basic setup.
• SXT Plus: This is the better starting point because it adds useful everyday upgrades like the power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, roof-rail crossbars, and satellite radio. It is the trim that most clearly improves livability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim. It brings leather, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, the 8.4-inch touchscreen, Uconnect Access, remote start, and parking aids, so you get the most meaningful comfort and tech upgrades for the money.
• R/T: Choose this if you want the sportiest Durango. The V8, sport-tuned suspension, performance steering, heavy-duty brakes, and 20-inch wheels give it a more aggressive personality.
• Citadel: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with premium leather, ventilated front seats, navigation, a sunroof, and extra chrome. It suits you best if you want the most upscale Durango experience.

Trailer Sway Control is standard across the lineup, and the Limited, R/T, and Citadel are the trims that add the most meaningful safety-tech options.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Dodge Durango?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping more than impulse buying.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 656 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.32% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,426, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Dodge Durango's resale value?

The current average of $10,619 sits slightly below last year's $11,459.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work in your favor if you’re buying now but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing pressure has already been reflected in the market, so condition and equipment will matter more when it’s time to list. A well-kept Durango with desirable features should still stand out better than a rougher example.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Dodge Durango safe?

The 2014 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal-impact driver protection and rollover resistance, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. It also earns a Good IIHS result in all assessed measures except the small-overlap frontal-impact test, which had not been assessed at the time of the review.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Durango includes Ready Alert Braking, Rain Brake Support, and Trailer Sway Control as standard equipment. Uconnect Access also adds an emergency-call button, and the available safety tech package brings Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-Spot and Cross-Path Detection, and Forward-Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation. The Limited can also be upgraded with rain-sensing wipers and automatic high-beam headlights.

One caveat is that the small-overlap frontal-impact test had not been assessed in the IIHS review, so you should pay close attention to crash history and repair quality on used examples.

Should I buy a 2014 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.32% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its roomy, refined cabin, strong technology, and rugged, durable feel.

The bottom line: The 2014 Dodge Durango makes the most sense if you want a spacious, well-equipped SUV with strong tech and a more substantial driving feel. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, this year’s softened pricing makes it worth a close look, especially if you can find a clean, well-maintained example. If reliability and ownership costs are your top priorities, you may want to compare it carefully against other years before committing.
