What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment works as expected. Because this model year can vary a lot by trim, it also helps to confirm that the features you want are actually present on the specific car you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes LS, 1LT, 2LT, LTZ, Eco and Diesel. The base LS is the most stripped-down choice, while higher trims add features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, cruise control, power mirrors, a dash-top storage bin, leather seats, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, remote engine start, a reversing camera, automatic climate control, keyless passive entry with push-button start, heated outside mirrors, fog lights, and larger wheels.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder, while the 1LT uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder with the same horsepower but more accessible torque. The Diesel trim uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter clean diesel engine with 151 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque, and it is tuned for strong highway efficiency.
• Safety package: OnStar is standard and includes Automatic Crash Response, Crisis Assist, and Emergency Services. The car also offers an optional reversing camera, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Side Blind Zone Alert, with those driver-assistance features not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink includes a 7-inch color touchscreen, a USB port, Internet radio access, Bluetooth connectivity, music streaming, hands-free texting, and Siri Eyes Free support. The base LS does not get MyLink, and some safety and convenience features are tied to higher trims or packages.
• Fuel efficiency: The Diesel trim is rated at 27 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined. The cost-effectiveness notes also point out that the Diesel’s value depends heavily on the price gap between gasoline and diesel fuel.

Which 2014 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 6 trim levels: LS, 1LT, Eco, 2LT, LTZ, Diesel.

Here's the short version:

• LS: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Cruze, but it leaves out some of the convenience and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
• 1LT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the turbocharged 1.4-liter engine, power mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, cruise control, a dash-top storage bin, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.
• Eco: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you still want a well-equipped car, since it builds on the 1LT with aerodynamic enhancements, powertrain changes aimed at better mileage, lightweight 17-inch wheels, and MyLink with Bluetooth music streaming.
• 2LT: This trim is the comfort upgrade, adding leather seats, heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, remote engine start, MyLink, a sport suspension, rear disc brakes, and larger 17-inch aluminum wheels.
• LTZ: This is the most upscale gas-powered trim, with an automatic transmission, reversing camera, automatic climate control, keyless passive entry with push-button start, heated outside mirrors, fog lights, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.
• Diesel: Pick this if you drive a lot of highway miles and want the strongest fuel-economy story, but its value depends on fuel prices and it carries a higher purchase price than the 2LT.

The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so if driver-assistance features matter to you, make sure the specific car you’re shopping has the reversing camera, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Side Blind Zone Alert you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Chevrolet Cruze?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find reasonable opportunities.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,190 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $6,487, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $6,507 sits slightly below last year's $6,820.

That softer pricing suggests the Cruze has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the car in good condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. The market still appears active enough that well-kept examples should remain sellable, especially when they have desirable equipment and a clean history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze earns an overall crash-test rating of five-star ratings from NHTSA, and IIHS rates it Good in all crash-test assessments except the small overlap frontal impact test, where it is rated Marginal.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Cruze’s standard OnStar system includes Automatic Crash Response, Crisis Assist, and Emergency Services, and it also provides remote door unlocking, horn and lighting operation, remote diagnostic checks and reports, stolen vehicle assistance, and turn-by-turn navigation. The car is offered with an optional reversing camera, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Side Blind Zone Alert, though those features are not standard on every trim. The Marginal small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind when you’re comparing this model year with rivals.

Should I buy a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.58% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 stands out for its newly optional turbodiesel engine and class-leading fuel economy.

The bottom line: If you want a used Cruze with strong value, good fuel economy, and a broad range of trims, the 2014 is a sensible place to shop. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the lower-priced gas trims and verify condition carefully; if you want the strongest efficiency story and do a lot of highway driving, the Diesel is the specialty choice to compare against other years.

How does the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze compare to the 2014 Ford Focus?

Our experts score the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze 7.5/10 and the 2014 Ford Focus 7.7/10.

The Focus has a slight edge in expert scoring and a stronger accident-free share, while the Cruze counters with a lower average used price and a slightly better good-and-great deal share. The Cruze also stands out for its fuel-economy story and safety reputation, while the Focus brings a bit more power and a lower starting MSRP. If you want the cheaper used buy, the Cruze looks appealing; if you want the newer-feeling competitor with a small score advantage, the Focus is worth a look.
