CarGurus Analysis: 2014 BMW 5 Series
Summary
With 846 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,677, 31.3% of 2014 BMW 5 Series listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW 5 Series 4.55 / 5 stars.
59.2% of 2014 BMW 5 Series listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into BMW’s traditional strengths: performance, technology, and a driver-focused feel. By this point in the generation, it offered a broad mix of powertrains, including the 528i, 535i, 550i, and the ActiveHybrid 5, along with the wagon body style and optional xDrive all-wheel drive. It also brought a useful set of available features for its era, such as Parking Assist, adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, a head-up display, ventilated front seats, and a rear entertainment system.
What makes the 2014 model especially appealing is the combination of strong engine choices and a cabin that feels more modern than earlier 5 Series versions. The 528i used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while the 530i got a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six with 225 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. The 550i brought a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 with 443 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, and the ActiveHybrid 5 paired a 3.0-liter inline-six with an electric motor for 26 mpg combined. BMW also gave the 2014 model navigation and handwriting recognition as standard equipment across the board.
At the same time, the 2014 BMW 5 Series is not without drawbacks. The generation’s reliability record is mixed, and the source points to common trouble spots such as crankshaft pulleys, leaking trunk and sunroof seals, battery drains, and electrical issues. It also notes that the four-cylinder models can have faulty timing chains. Even so, for buyers who want a comfortable, well-equipped luxury sedan with real performance credentials, the 2014 5 Series remains a compelling choice.

This is my third BMW and second 5 series and they just never seem to disappoint. You have to keep in mind that BMWs are not to be strictly a luxury car, their focus is on performance/luxury. The ride is responsive and sure footed but the cup holders leave a little to be desired so just know what you are looking for and you will not be disappointed.

How much does the 2014 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,696 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,675 |
| Year-Round High | $11,348 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,347 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.74% |
Prices have softened 5.74% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 815 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and condition.
Is the 2014 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 4.55/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction overall. Drivers commonly praise the smooth, comfortable ride, the performance, and the interior features, while also noting the balance of luxury and driving feel. For you, that makes this a good fit if you want a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into performance and a well-equipped cabin. With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market also gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.55/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a mix of dependable ownership experiences and some concerns about durability, with owners praising the car’s comfort and performance while also mentioning issues tied to reliability. That means you should expect a premium driving experience, but you should also be selective about maintenance history and condition if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 5 Series?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on body condition, seals, electrical operation, and signs of uneven wear or deferred maintenance. Because this model year has known trouble spots, condition matters more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 815 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,675, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $10,696 sits slightly below last year's $11,347.
That price movement suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help limit near-term downside if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, the key will be condition, maintenance records, and how well the car presents against other listings in the market. A well-kept example should be easier to move than one with visible wear or an unclear history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest value balance, the 2014 is the one to target when you find a clean, well-documented example at the low end of the price range. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can widen your search to nearby years and compare condition, accident history, and asking price closely before deciding.
