CarGurus Analysis: 2014 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 100 currently listed for sale near Tucson, AZ and an average price of $8,497.00, 12.0% of 2014 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 BMW 3 Series 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2014 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sports sedan with a long-established reputation for balanced driving dynamics. In expert testing, the 328i delivered punchy acceleration and solid, reassuring brakes, while its handling stayed flat and confident even without excessive jolts from rougher roads. That combination gives the car the kind of polished, controlled feel that has long defined the 3 Series name.
What makes the 2014 BMW 3 Series especially appealing is the way it blends that athletic character with a clean four-door body and a cabin that many buyers still find desirable. The expert summary describes the 3 Series as the car that invented the category, built around deft handling, sublime steering, and silky engines. At the same time, it also makes clear that the latest version is no longer the untouchable benchmark it once was, with newer rivals such as the Lexus IS and Cadillac ATS closing the gap. For shoppers, that means the 2014 BMW 3 Series remains a compelling choice for driving enjoyment, but not an automatic pick over every competitor.

Diesel review only, I’ve never tested the gasoline models. The BMW 328D diesel xdrive is the most fuel efficient internal combustion engine powered all wheel drive vehicle. Go ahead and try to find another more efficient, you won’t be able to. For Highway it will get you into the 52 MPG range stock, and with a some modification into the 56 range, City is still high 40’s. It has all the creature comfort’s you could want, and is a quite, comfortable ride! Blasts through snow and ice especially with winter tires, this is a great car for all regions. Car is plenty spacious for four and has a large trunk (boot ) storage. Find yourself one!

Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — 4.79/5. The expert rating is 7.33/10, and the standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise the fun driving experience, modern styling, and comfort-focused touches like heated seats and a spacious interior. The overview also frames it as a sports sedan with balanced dynamics and a polished, controlled feel, which fits shoppers who want an engaging four-door rather than a plain commuter car.
The user feedback also points to fuel efficiency in the diesel model and a generally desirable cabin, though some owners mention technology quirks and pricing concerns. With 27.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop carefully for the right example.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers calling out the car’s fun driving character, safety features, and comfort. The expert evaluation also emphasizes BMW’s generous no-cost maintenance plan, which includes scheduled checkups and replacements for oil, wipers, brake discs and pads, and other parts.
That said, used-buyer risk still depends heavily on how the car was maintained, so you should verify service history and look closely at wear items before you buy.
What should I look for when buying a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage, optional equipment, or signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s features still work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport are the distinct trim lines, and the Sport and M Sport trims emphasize performance with more aggressive body styling, larger wheels and stiffer suspensions. The base setup is more restrained, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the sharper look and feel.
- Powertrain: You can choose from 2.0-liter twin-turbo 4-cylinder engines in the 320i and 328i, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder in the 335i, or a 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel 4-cylinder in the 328d. The diesel is noted for an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating.
- Safety package: BMW Assist eCall is standard, and it can dial 911 after a crash. Adaptive brake lamps and automatic brake drying are also standard, while blind-spot detection, parking sensors and even a basic alarm system are not.
- Infotainment: The iDrive system uses a multidirectional controller, and the big color screen has clear map graphics and quick-loading menus. Bluetooth streaming audio, a USB connector and BMW Apps are included, while an automated parallel parking system, head-up display, adaptive cruise control and extra cameras are optional.
- Fuel efficiency: The 328d promises an EPA-estimated 45-mpg-highway rating, while the expert tester averaged 17 mpg in mostly city driving with some highway use.
Which 2014 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2014 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Luxury, Sport and M Sport.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the most straightforward choice if you want the 3 Series experience without paying for the more aggressive appearance and suspension tuning. It gives you the core sedan formula, but you should expect fewer of the visual and chassis upgrades that define the sportier trims.
- Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale presentation without moving all the way to the firmer, more aggressive setup of the sport-oriented trims. It suits you best if comfort and appearance matter more than the sharpest handling tune.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest blend of style and driving character. It adds more aggressive body styling, larger wheels and stiffer suspensions, which better match the car’s athletic personality.
- M Sport: Pick this if you want the most aggressive look and feel in the lineup. It builds on the sport theme with the same performance-focused visual and chassis upgrades, so it makes the most sense if you care most about the car’s dynamic character.
Blind-spot detection, parking sensors and even a basic alarm system aren’t standard, so you may want to factor those safety-related gaps into your trim choice.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,446 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,798.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $10,210 sits slightly below last year's $10,533.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means you should be realistic about appreciation and focus on preserving condition, mileage, and service history. Well-kept examples should still have an edge with shoppers who want a classic sport sedan feel.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2014 BMW 3 Series safe?
It still gains five-star ratings on government crash tests, though it didn’t fare too well in new small-overlap crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive brake lamps, automatic brake drying in wet weather, BMW Assist eCall, airbags and stability control. The telematics system can dial 911 after a crash, but a backup camera is not standard, and blind-spot detection, parking sensors and a basic alarm system are also not standard.
The small-overlap result is the main caveat to keep in mind, so you should pay close attention to crash protection expectations and available safety options when shopping used examples.
Should I buy a 2014 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 keeps the classic sports-sedan formula with balanced handling, punchy acceleration and a polished, controlled feel.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,680, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $10,210 average.
- It becomes sedan-only, sharpening its mission.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy, the 2014 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a more focused sedan-only identity, the 2015 is the cleaner alternative. For most used shoppers, the 2014 makes more sense unless you specifically want the next year’s updated direction.
