Overview
Ford has long built vehicles for dedicated use by law enforcement and public service, though it didn’t begin calling them Police Interceptors until the early 1990s with the introduction of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. In 2012, Ford added the Explorer SUV to the catalog. Two variants emerged with configurations for emergency responders and police use. Like Police Interceptors before it, the Explorer got upgraded engines, better cooling, permanent torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, and better brakes. The latest Explorer Police Interceptor is based on the sixth-generation civilian SUV, and sports three engine choices with a 0-60 mph time as quick as 5.5 seconds.
