Overview
Set to arrive in North America in the summer of 2008, the 2009 Mazda MAZDA6 is an all-new version of the sporty midsize sedan that made such a big splash when it debuted back in 2003. For the moment offered only as a sedan (the hatch sticks around in Europe), the 2009 MAZDA6 will differ from its European version in size and looks.
Designed specifically for North American roads (according to Mazda's press release), the sedan is slightly larger, with a simpler front grille, wider-spaced foglights, dual exhaust pipes, beefier wheel wells, and a curvier rear fascia. Tweaks to the four-wheel independent suspension and larger disc brakes have improved handling in the front-wheel-drive MAZDA6 for a smoother ride over bumpy American roads. Dynamic stability control is a new addition to the standard equipment, which includes 4-wheel ABS brakes, dual front-side and side curtain airbags, traction control, 17-inch wheels, and a tire monitor. The sedan will be available in three trims - Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
The biggest change comes with the powertrain. The standard engine is now a 2.5-liter inline four, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed shiftable automatic. In an effort to compete with the Accord and Camry, the 2009 MAZDA6 will also offer a 3.7-liter V6 from its CX-9 SUV, purportedly giving it an edge in the power department over its Japanese rivals. The V6 comes only with a 6-speed shiftable automatic. Horsepower figures have not been released yet, but based on the European version, the four-cylinder is likely to get around 168 hp, while the V6 will deliver 270.
Although slightly larger in size, a new aerodynamic design, fastback-like roof, and lighter-weight materials help improve fuel economy. Interior details are sketchy, but base models will likely start with full power features, a CD player, and cruise control, while higher trims will feature a navigation system, wheel-mounted audio and climate controls, leather seats, and a sunroof.

I don’t have a single complaint about this car. It is spacious, efficient, nice-looking, has plenty of room in the trunk, and has the features I wanted. I fully recommend the 2009 Mazda 6 (or any other 2nd generation model)

I'm obsessive when it comes to buying a new car. I have researched the mid-size class for 4 months before buying the Mazda6. I have test driven multiple times the Pontiac G8, Altima, Accord, Malibu, Fusion, and Camry. I was skeptic when I went to Mazda because some of the other cars are so highly rated. At the end, I decided for the Mazda6 s Sport even though I get the GM employee discount. If you are in the market for a sporty mid-size family sedan, you cannot beat the 2009 Mazda6. It's interior space is bigger than any of it's competitors save the Accord. It's trunk space is the biggest of all cars. The V6 has more power and torque than it's competitors. What really convinced me to buy the Mazda though was its sporty feel. It drives like a sports car...the total opposite of a Camry. It's a FUN car to drive. It zips through curves and makes you feel like an extension of the car rather than isolating you from the road. Much like the BMW that my wife drives. On top of this, the Mazda was cheaper than any of the other cars. Mazdas had been criticized in the past for reliability issues which prompted most people to buy Honda or Toyota, but that is no longer true. Mazda has greatly improved their quality and to back that up, they give you a *lifetime* powertrain warrenty. If you are in the midsize market, do yourself a favor and test drive the Mazda 6. You will NOT regret it.
