Honda does sleek and sexy with its S2000 convertible coupe. Set for an overhaul in 2010, the 2009 S2000 sees no changes to either trim. The rear-wheel-drive convertible features amazing race car-like handling around curves, with minimal body lean and a stiff, but not harsh suspension.

Instantaneous acceleration response comes from the well-engineered powertrain. The 16-valve, 2.2-liter DOHC inline-four engine pairs with a 6-speed short-throw manual. They combine to put out 237 hp and 162 lb-ft of high-end torque at 6,800 RPM. Quick, yet quiet, with a nice engine growl, the 2009 S2000's electronic drive-by-wire throttle delivers more responsive adjustments to driving conditions. The coupe rides on a double wishbone front and rear suspension, and its rear-wheel drive and engine layout set up a 50/50 weight balance that accounts for its superior cornering capabilities.

Both the Base and CR trims return for 2009. Base models feature a power soft top with heated rear glass window, power accessories, wheel-mounted cruise control, a CD player, leather seats, and xenon headlamps. The 2009 S2000 CR draws its inspiration from the race track. Cruise control and the CD player get ditched to reduce body weight by 51 pounds. A sport-tuned suspension, stiffer springs and shocks, larger stabilizer bars, larger rear tires, a more rigid chassis, and quicker steering ratio deliver crisp and agile handling, while a front underbody spoiler and large rear wing spoiler improve aerodynamics. Inside, the CR adds suede seat inserts for better driver grip, yellow stitching, leather trim, and a spherical alloy shifter. On the outside, a removable aluminum hard top replaces the soft top.

All trims earn top-notch safety ratings, as expected for a Honda – five stars in rollover tests and four in frontal impact. Dual-stage dual front airbags, traction and stability control, 17-inch wheels with performance tires (18-inch on the CR), and 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes make up the safety profile.

The 2009 S2000 is meant for driving excitement. Built for two, passengers get 44 inches of legroom and comfortably supportive seats. Leave the bags at home, however, as the trunk holds only 5 cubic feet. Drivers will either love or hate the futuristic digital gauges. Critics unanimously use the word “fun” to describe the S2000, with some making comparisons to the Porsche Boxster. Plenty powerful, it offers good handling dynamics, precise braking, and refined engineering. Downsides include the lack of interior space and some tire noise with the convertible top up.
