Overview

One of the top ten best-selling vehicles in the U.S., the Chevrolet Impala has traveled a long road, yet always maintained its distinction as a roomy, full-size family sedan. It may not have the looks or style or responsive handling of some of its competitors, but riding on its name and interior passenger space, it continues to draw in loyal fans. The 2009 Impala resists any structural or stylistic changes, but does get a few additional features.
The 2009 Impala's primary appeal rests in its six-passenger seating capacity. It seats five in the standard front bucket/rear bench setup, but a front bench can be added. Rear seats also split-fold, except in the base LS version, to add extra cargo room. Despite this capacity, long-legged adults may feel cramped on anything but short trips, and the Impala retains its budget-looking hard plastic surfaces. Its 19-cubic-foot trunk represents a significant jump from the 12 and 15 cubic feet in the Accord and Camry.
The second highlight can be found in the greenness of the 2009 Impala's powertrains. Both the standard 211-hp, 3.5-liter V6 and the 224-hp, 3.9-liter V6 in the luxury LTZ trim are flex-fuel E85 engines, and the larger engine features Active Fuel Management, which deactivates up to three cylinders to improve fuel economy. The Impala needs this, too, as the EPA rates it at only 18/29 mpg. The smaller V6 is available in the LS and both LT trims, while the larger V6 is offered on the LTZ. The SS trim features a 303-hp, 5.3-liter V8, also available with Active Fuel Management. With nods to the performance past of the Impala, the SS comes with a sport-tuned suspension, polished alloy wheels, a pleasing V8 rumble, and 0-60 times of a respectable 6.4 seconds.
For 2009, ABS brakes, traction and stability control, and side impact curtain airbags become standard for all trims (they were previously offered only on the LTZ and SS). Dual front-side airbags, OnStar, and a tire monitor contribute to the 2009 Impala's strong safety record. Also new for 2009 are larger 18-inch wheels for the SS, along with a revised rear spoiler (optional on other trims). The Impala joins the cellphone generation by adding Bluetooth, and dual-zone climate control is standard across the lineup. Cupholders get a redesign to better accommodate larger items.
The 2009 Impala won't turn heads or win design awards, but its consistency in handling, easy driveability, decent acceleration power, and spacious interior make it a safe bet for conservative buyers. It may not have the cachet of a Camry or Accord, but it knows what families need: reliability and plenty of space.

This is my fourth Impala and by far the best. I was happy with the 2000, impressed with the 2005 LS, satisfied with 2008 LS but totally impressed with my new 2009 LTZ! Performance: Acceleration of the 3.9 V6 is more than adequate for highway travel and passing. Braking is true and straight and the FE3 suspension while firmer than the FE1 ride is still very nicely mannered and matched well to the V6 powerplant. The build quality gets better all the time. While not as nice as Lexus or Cadillac the interior materials are very nice for a car of this price point (much nicer than Toyota Camry or Chrysler 300). With 6 airbags, ABS and traction control, stability control this car is as safe as it gets, and it sports a 5 star crash protection rating. The appearance, interior and exterior are pleasing and very modern. The car is pleasing to the eye yet has enough stlye so as not to get lost when compaired to cookie cutter Japanese compeditors. The sportiness and luxury mix of the LTZ is great. The flip and fold rear seating is unique to the Imapa in the full size class. Bluetooth connectivity and stability control two reasons we purchased this car. Fuel economy of this vehincle is great for the class, almost all the miles on this car are interstate miles averaging 31 MPG using E-10 fuel and 27 MPG using E-85. This is a very nice, contemporary American Family car that is sporty and fun to drive. It has ample room for a family of four adults and their gear for weekend trips.

If I HAD to choose between a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and the Chevy Impala Police Package, the Crown Vic wins hands down. Then again, the CV is nearly 8K to 10K more when new, and it shows. The 9C1 Impala is a smaller more nimble car, beefed up to take on the rugged duty of police work. It has a sleek design, and an easily maintained, cost-effective 3.9L V6. The car has a very light feel, making it a joy to cruise around in. I love the police package, the beefier suspension and skid plate, and the heavy duty cooling system, wheels, brakes and transmission brings a lot of peace of mind when driving on rougher roads or in a defensive-driving situation. I think the Impalas have found a perfect niche, priced like a smaller mid-sized sedan but nearly as accommodating as a full-sized sedan. The Impala line is a workhorse platform that still looks good going down the road. There are a lot of forums dedicated to the Impala so as an owner, it means you're in good company and have a great resource to turn to when working on one.

The Chevy Impala LT has plenty of room for passengers as well as ample trunk space for a large amount of luggage. Offers a great ride with tremendous gas mileage for a large sedan. Very dependable and low maintenance cost.

Great car. If you look for them at Chevy Dealerships in the used section, you can find great priced examples that are in great condition because the were rental car agency fleet cars. I have very few complaints with the car, and have never been in a situation where it hasn't performed to the best of its ability. Great mpg: 32 hwy, 30 interstate, 26 city. The engine has power when you need it, maybe a bit too much for the front tires to handle if you aren't being cautious. Overall, it is a great car that I would recommend.
