How much does the 2016 Toyota Prius cost?

Prices are up 2.07% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.

There are 717 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10. It’s presented as a central name in the hybrid market and a standard bearer for the segment, with a fourth-generation update that keeps the familiar Prius formula while adding a few new tricks. 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Prius is framed as a proven hybrid name with staying power, and the expert review emphasizes its established reputation and continued relevance in the hybrid market. Its 1.8-liter gas engine paired with two electric motor-generators is described as delivering decent pickup and surprisingly good driving manners, while the regenerative braking system helps save gas. The cost-effectiveness commentary also notes that the pricing is competitive enough to attract new owners, which supports the case for a practical, low-drama ownership experience.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car’s condition and maintenance history match its reputation, especially because hybrid-specific components can be costly if neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on overall condition, signs of repair quality, and whether the hybrid system and braking feel behave as expected on a test drive. Because the Prius is a hybrid with distinctive controls and braking behavior, you’ll want to make sure nothing feels inconsistent or overly worn.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Two and Two Eco get a 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free, while the Three, Three Touring, Four, and Four Touring add a 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, and HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay. The Four also adds higher-level safety technology, so it’s the trim that best balances equipment and value.
• Powertrain: The Prius uses a 1.8-liter gas engine with two electric motor-generators for a net 121 horsepower. The Base model uses a nickel-metal-hydride battery, while every other trim gets a more compact lithium-ion pack. Fuel economy is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Two Eco is rated at 58/53/56.
• Safety package: Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, including enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology, plus advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Prius Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, while the Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Two and Two Eco come with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, USB 2.0 input, aux audio jack, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free. Higher trims move to a 7-inch touchscreen and add navigation, the Entune app suite, XM satellite radio trial, and traffic and weather overlays.
• Fuel efficiency: Fuel economy is estimated at 54 mpg city/50 highway/52 combined, and the Two Eco improves that to 58/53/56.

Which 2016 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Prius is offered in 6 trim levels: Two, Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four, Four Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Two: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Prius experience with the 6.1-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth voice activation, and Siri Eyes Free. It’s the simplest way to get into the model, but it leaves out the larger screen and richer tech found higher up.
• Two Eco: This is the best-value trim if your priority is efficiency, since it adds the same core equipment as the Two while delivering the strongest fuel-economy figures in the lineup. If you want the most mileage-focused version, this is the one to target.
• Three: This trim adds the 7-inch touchscreen, navigation, the Entune app suite, XM satellite radio trial, and traffic/weather overlays. It’s the right step up if you want a more complete tech package without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• Three Touring: This trim keeps the Three’s tech upgrades and adds the Touring treatment, making it the choice if you want a more upscale-feeling version of the midrange setup.
• Four: This is the trim to buy if you want the strongest mix of comfort, tech, and safety. It adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control, making it the most compelling all-around choice.
• Four Touring: This is the top trim, adding the Four’s safety technology plus the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. Choose it if you want the most complete feature set and are willing to pay for it.

The Four and Four Touring are the trims with the added safety technology, so they’re the ones to focus on if driver assistance matters most to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Prius?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 717 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.07% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 51.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,194, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Prius's resale value?

The current average of $15,140 sits slightly above last year's $14,833.

That upward move suggests the Prius is holding value reasonably well for a used hybrid, especially given its strong reputation and broad shopper appeal. If demand stays steady, sellers should continue to benefit from the model’s recognizable name and efficiency-focused appeal. The current pricing also suggests there’s still room for sellers to command solid money if the car is clean and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Prius safe?

The 2016 Toyota Prius earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Prius comes with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology, along with advanced front- and side-impact airbags. The Prius Four adds Pre-Collision Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, automatic high-beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. The Four and Four Touring also add a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.07% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The fourth-generation redesign brings updated styling, improved fuel-saving tech, and a more advanced feature set.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,536, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,140 average.
• It combines utility, comfort, and fuel economy in a way few cars can match.

The bottom line: If you want the newer fourth-generation Prius with updated tech and a still-reasonable market price, the 2016 is the better all-around pick. If your main goal is to spend less upfront, the 2015 is the smarter budget path, especially if you value the Prius formula more than the newest redesign.
