The S80 came out in 1999 as the successor to the S90 and underwent a number of changes toward the end of the millenium's first decade. After adding inline-six and V8 versions in 2007, Volvo gave the 2008 version another extensive makeover inside and out. The biggest change comes in the form of a T6 AWD trim that features a turbocharged 3.0-liter, 281-horsepower inline-six engine with a six-speed automatic transmission (all trims have a six-speed automatic). As with previous models, the S80 continues to get pretty good crash test ratings and runs strong beyond 60,000 miles, according to many drivers.

Across trims, gas mileage averages out to 15 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. All three trims have four doors, seat five, and have the same basic standard features, including air conditioning, power windows, a CD player, and power door locks. Higher-scale standard features include a sunroof and powered leather seats, as well as the ABS brakes, traction control, and stability control you'd expect from a model with high safety ratings. A navigation system is optional.

While the S80 has always had a solid reputation for safety and dependability, it doesn't get as much love from young people who like their drives fast and flashy. So does the 2008 Volvo S80 do anything to shed the line's pedestrian reputation? In one word: No. The '08 version simply builds on the model's existing reputation, especially the new T6. According to reviews, the T6 almost feels like a V8, which makes sense, considering that the V8 only tops the T6 by 30 hp. In addition, drivers like the safety features, interior, and reasonable price. So while the 2008 Volvo S80 may not win as many style points as the competition, it does get props for prioritizing function over form.
