This 5-passenger vehicle is Mercury's mid-sized sport-utility offering, and it's based on the Ford Escape. With more efficiency than power, it's a good choice for those who like the height and practicality of an SUV but don't want to go broke on gasoline. The Mariner is good-looking, with some nice touches such as wood-grain and brushed-aluminum accents and chrome door handles. The utility factor is certainly there, too, as you'll have 66.3 cubic feet of cargo space when the back seats are folded flat. The cushions must be removed to get the back row flat, and that's a minor inconvenience. For 2007 there are nine exterior colors, and for the interior, two cloth choices and four for leather. All-wheel drive, a roof rack, and running boards are among the options available to max out the SUV factor.
