A budget Lamborghini? Yes, that's absurd, and no, it doesn't exist, but three years ago the carmaker did introduce a lower-priced (!?!) alternative to the Murcielago, and it's become its best seller. The Lamborghini Gallardo, however, is no slouch in the performance or style department. It's all angles and bends, with a low, aggressive front end and steeply angled windshield, all hinting at forward motion. The 2007 Gallardo ups horsepower by 19 to 512 in its mid-mounted, 5.0-liter V10. A 6-speed manual is standard, but an optional E-gear clutchless paddle shifter with automatic or sport mode is available. If you care, and you probably do, the Gallardo gets for 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds, with a maximum speed of 195 mph. And fuel economy for this car...oh, just kidding. Available as a coupe or convertible, the 2007 Gallardo gets a new convenient and fast power top for its Spyder roadster. What makes the Gallardo even more versatile is its all-wheel drive system, which distributes torque where it's needed. A weight ratio of 48/52 front/rear is supposed to improve stability and handling. A pop-up roll bar is included for safety, as are standard antilock brakes, and an electronically adjustable rear spoiler is included for looks. In 2007, a special edition Gallardo Nera will be offered in limited numbers. The Nera features Alcantara leather headliner, seats, and trim, a rear-view camera, and a navigation system. Exterior color will be menacing black. Great engine growl and better street maneuverability than the Murcielago are highlights of the Gallardo (aside from the obvious thrilling speed). Some rear visibility issues are rectified by the optional camera.
