Lincoln's luxury sport sedan offering differs from many competitors in that it features rear-wheel drive. Sitting on a Jaguar S platform, the 2005 Lincoln LS gets a new front end that is popular with owners (the rear end is another story). Also new is a revised 5-speed auto tran for smoother shifting. Some new options this year include side curtain airbags, parking assist, and power-adjustable pedals.

The 2005 LS comes with either a 232-hp, 3.0-liter V6 in Appearance, Luxury, or Premium trims, or a 3.9-liter, 280-hp V8 in Sport and Ultimate trims. The auto tran adds sport-shifting in the V8. All have full power features, including power front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, dual front-side airbags, CD player, ABS brakes, and traction control. The V8s beef up the sports suspension and carry larger 17-inch wheels. An optional sunroof is standard on the Ultimate V8. Option packages add heated seats, xenon headlights, a navigation system, and stability control. The V8s can be outfitted with chrome wheels, foglights, rear spoiler, and a more menacing front grille.

The interior of the 2005 LS features wood and nickel trim. It seats four, though the backseat is noticeably cramped. Rear seats split-fold down to open up the 13.5 cubic foot trunk. The LS struggles to compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes Benz E Series. Though drivers like the front legroom, handling, V8 power, and the smooth and comfortable ride, some say the harsher sport suspension takes getting used to. Other complaints mention the 18/24 mpg and bland interior.
