Back after a year hiatus, the half-ton pickup 2005 GMC Sierra 1500HD packs a 6.0-liter, 300-hp V8 and 4-speed auto tran that produce 360 lb-ft of torque. It is available in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, in two trims -- the SLE and more luxurious SLT. Both trims are only available as a Crew Cab, which seats six people and has a 6.5-foot cargo bed. The bed is smaller than on the 1500 Extended models, in order to accommodate passenger comfort.

The full-sized 2005 Sierra 1500HD (the HD stands for heavy-duty) has the best towing capacity of any pickup, able to haul over 10,000 pounds. New this year on the 1500HD are 17-inch wheels and an optional sunroof. Both the SLE and SLT come with ABS brakes and dual front airbags, and traction control is optional with the rear-wheel drive models. Full power features, a CD player and cruise control keep passengers happy in the SLE, while the SLT adds a touch of class to your pickup with leather seats, a CD changer, and a power driver's seat. Tie-downs, a cargo cover, and a net are all optional for the cargo area.

Though the heavy duty versions of the Sierra are meant more for work and utilitarian use, GMC has outfitted the interior with enough features to make the pickup versatile as a family car as well. Downsides include weak 15/20 fuel economy and a somewhat harsh ride from the truck platform. What keeps owners happy is the V8 power and towing performance.
