Overview

Some new features this year for the 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 half-ton pickup are a hybrid version (available in the West), more horsepower for the standard 6.0 V8, and some demotions for the upscale Denali trim. The rear-wheel drive pickup comes in a two-door Regular Cab, an Extended Cab with reverse-hinged rear doors, and a traditional 4-door Crew Cab. There are five trim levels, ranging from the utilitarian Work up through the luxury Denali, which comes with leather seats and a less work-oriented suspension. The Denali features all-wheel drive, while two types of 4WD are optional for the other trims -- both have low-range gearing, but only one can be engaged on dry pavement. Pickup bed size is either 6.6 or 8.0 feet on the Regular and Extended models, and 5.8 feet on the Crew Cab, to accommodate room for five passengers.
Base models come with a 4.3-liter, 195-hp V6, and there is also a 4.8-liter, 285-hp V8, and a 5.3-liter, 295-hp V8. The Denali has a 6.0-liter V8 and rises 20-hp to a 345-hp rating this year. All V8s come with a standard 4-speed automatic, but a 5-speed manual is optional on the lower trim offerings. New this year is a hybrid version of the 5.3 V8, which shuts off the engine when the pickup comes to a halt, to save a few points in the normally 15/20 mpg. It is not a true hybrid, in that it does not power the vehicle at all, but it does offer generator power to cargo bed power outlets. Other changes this year include standard 17-inch tires, and the loss of standard 4-wheel disc brakes. The 2005 Sierra 1500 has returned to the front disc/rear drum setup of the past. The Denali no longer comes as an Extended Cab, but only as a Crew Cab.
As you move up the line, you gain power features and options, such as a sunroof and larger 20-inch tires. An interesting option no longer available for the Denali is Quadrasteer, a 4-wheel steering system that improves handling and reduces turn ratios. ABS and dual front airbags are standard across the models, and traction control is available on some. Generally, owners of the 2005 Sierra 1500 like its power and hauling capability, though some wish it had even more power. They say the ride can be harsh and brakes show early wear and tear. On the plus side, drivers feel safe and say the long list of features of the more upscale trims make the truck suitable for families as well as work tasks.

A solid truck with just performance lacking on the V8 5.8L engine - dont even THINK about getting the V6 thinking your going to save on gas - with traffic your not going to be flying anyway. Everything else on this truck, from looks (when its not all banged up) to interior comfort is very high, as all SLT GMC models are - much better in these "older" sierra classic models than the newer ones.

* Performance - acceleration, braking, handling are what you expect from a truck * Build Quality - 85,000 miles and no rattles or strang noises to report, transmission internal part replaced under warranty * Appearance - Interior is a bit dated by todays standard, but the seats rock and the exterior is classic GMC goodness. * Cost of Ownership - Gas mileage not to bad, 15-16 in town and 18-23 on the open road. * Fun Factor - its has its moments of joy.
