Overview

The 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac :-( continued to be a popular choice with buyers looking for the comfort of a mid-size SUV and the versatility and ruggedness of a pickup truck.
The hybrid 'sport utility truck' may never have matched the sales figures set by its progenitor, the top-selling Ford Explorer SUV, but the folks in Dearborn knew how to size up the market for this niche vehicle; dealers sold them faster than they could stock them.
Ford's Safety Canopy side-curtain air bag was available as an option on the 2003 Explorer Sport Trac. Other safety options, like front and rear stabilizer bars, Control Trac (Ford's proprietary on-the-fly 4WD electric shift box) were optional; anti-lock brakes were standard.
In addition to the XLS and XLT trims, Ford launched a new "Adrenalin" options package (which would evolve into a full-fledged trim the following year) targeted at young drivers looking for flash and performance.
Under the hood, the '03 Ford Explorer Sport Trac had an unexciting but reliable 4.0 liter V6 engine. Four-wheel drive was an option for a couple of thousand bucks, and most of the '03 Explorer Sport Trac's buyers sprung for it (why get a rugged SUV/pickup hybrid if you're not going to take it off-road?)

The pick up bed is useless at 4' deep. Nice ride and decent gas mileage.

This is a great truck, very sound and sturdy. It handles excellent on gravel, snow, etc. The interior is very friendly too. The one major down side is the transmission. I had to get it re-built at around 80,000 km's., spent around 2 grand on that. Very disappointing!

( Id rate it a 4.5 ) Ive had my Sport Trac for 19 years! The only major engine repair I needed to do was to replace the fuel pump over 5 years ago. I wish I had the onboard compass/temperature gauges but other than that Ive been toying with the idea of replacing the engine should it ever fail which it has not done after 230,000 miles. Its roomy for my long legs and 62 frame. I have a 2-wheel drive and I have noticed poor traction on steep grades with no weight in the back so an all wheel or 4-wheel drive option would have been nice in a handful of situations. The center console armrest is probably the weak link in the interior. It has broken twice and needed to be replaced at a cost of ~$140. But after 19 years, Im still not quite ready to let it go.
