Used 2002 Volkswagen Jetta for Sale near California
For 2002, Volkswagen greatly expanded it lineup of Jetta wagons, which had been introduced a year earlier. The Jetta wagon was now available with a turbocharged 1.8T four-cylinder engine, which generated 180 horsepower (up 30 hp from the previous year), as well as a 90-horsepower, 1.9-liter four-cylinder diesel with the TDI (turbo direct injection) feature.
Jetta wagons were also available with the base 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four cylinder engine and a 174-horsepower V6. Later in the model year, horsepower for the V6 was upped to 200.
On the sedan side, the high-end Jetta GLX V6 was equipped with a new five-speed automatic transmission with the Tiptronic feature, which enabled drivers to shift manually depending on driving conditions. A five-speed manual transmission was standard for the other Jetta sedans and wagons, while a four-speed automatic was available as an option.
For the sedans as well as the wagons, standard features included air conditioning, power door locks, power steering, dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, and an anti-theft alarm system. Higher-end models added such features as traction control, power windows, and a CD player. The GLX wagons and sedans added wood trim, heated front seats, leather seats, and a sunroof.
Finally, in an effort to meet head-on lingering complaints about the build quality of its Jetta models, Volkswagen effectively doubled the length of its bumper-to-bumper warranty, from two years/24,000 miles to four years/50,000 miles.
Drivers appreciated the Jetta's handling, safety features, power, and sportiness. However, some drivers noted that the car still had quality-control issues requiring expensive repairs. The transmission and electrical system were noted by some drivers as being particularly troublesome. Perhaps that extended warranty wasn't such a bad idea after all

(118 reviews)I've had this car for about a year and a half and put roughly 20k miles on it so far. It is one of the best cars I've owned. I've read many bad reviews on the car and it's series and it was listed in consumer reports cars to avoid. Mine is slightly rare in that it is the GLS, leather, premium sound, moon roof, seat warmers, etc. but it's manual transmission. The only problem I've had with this car was in winter time in Washington state. The rain gutters clogged up and caused water to get into the car. I was easily able to treat the issue and it was a few months before it happened again. I may be annoyed with this issue every few months but now I'm living in southern California and I park my car in a garage. Issue avoided. The car is responsive and handles well. Plenty of trunk space. I get complements on it all the time. People say it's a cute little car or that it just looks good. People who sit in it are usually impressed with the look and feel, especially at night. Though the back seat doesn't have much leg room for a 4 door. The cup holders block radio control and the readout. However, there are buttons on the steering wheel so it's a minor issue.
Where to start? I sincerely miss this car which I owned for four years and drove over 100,000 miles in it. Sold it to my sister who still drives it to this day. Other than the regular maintenance (oil change, tires, etc...) I had absolutely zero problem with my Jetta.
I adore my darling, practical glx wagon! Unlike the other models, mine is actually made in Germany so I feel the build quality is much better. My car is so fun to drive and it carries my dogs, my horses grain bags and groceries all in one trip! I just cannot say enough about this car! I change my oil with only mobile one synthetic oil and I always use the high quality filters made by KT. When I need a new car I am hoping they will make another great wagon!
The car just keeps on going.. I have had it for about 8 months now and am nearly 50+ thousand miles deep. 2002 with 168,000 miles. I run synthetic oil every 5,000 and it has to be the most reliable car I have ever owned. Occasionally the coilpacks go out (every 30,000 or so) but, they are easy to swap and not too expensive and the car runs until they arrive. I drive 80+ everywhere I go and with the original motor, turbo, and all original drive-train Im amazed that it still responds instantly to my demands. Luckily my car was taken care of and I think she will go 300K+ before she gets a swap.
TDI engines can burn biodiesel, which is a renewable resource, and is relatively carbon neutral. The engine themselves lasts 25,000 hours...which at 40 mph at 50 % load is equal to more than a million miles. Maintenance is more involved...but easy enough for one to do. I get about 40 mpg in city, and 54 mpg on freeway.
