Used 2001 Volkswagen Golf for Sale near Columbus, GA
Volkwagen made an effort to upgrade the "fit and finish" elements of its venerable Golf hatchback models for 2001 with a number of improvements. Interior cloth fabrics were upgraded, for instance, and the cupholders got an update in an effort to make them more durable (they tended to break easily in earlier models). Leather upholstery was added to some trim packages, side-curtain head-protection airbags were offered as optional equipment, audio controls were added to the steering wheels of some versions, and the optional sports suspension was tightened up.
Overall, the Golf was available in five different trim packages. The base two-door GL trim came with a 115-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the GL TDI came with a 90-hp, 1.9-liter diesel engine with the TDI (turbo direct injection) feature. The four-door GLS versions were available with either the base 115-hp 4-cylinder engine, the 90-hp diesel engine (called the GLS TDI trim), or a 150-hp, 1.8-liter gas engine (called the Golf GL 1.8T).
Standard equipment for the GL and GL TDI included air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, tilt steering, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system. The GLS packages added cruise control (also standard on the GL TDI), power windows, power door locks, and child safety door locks. The GLS 1.8T also added traction control. Optional equipment included a CD player and a moonroof, as well as a premium sound system.
The Volkswagen Golf, and especially the turbo models, continued to receive high marks from the drivers, who liked the car's power, styling, build quality, safety features, and handling. As always, though, some drivers noted that the car needed too many trips to the repair shop. There were complaints about VW customer service as well.

Wheel in 4 corners means this car drives like a dream, acceleration pushes you back in the seat and you can chuck this baby about without worrying if you'll end up in a field. Diesel powered means it's super efficient too - Bounus!!
The 1.8t was a fairly quick car in 150bhp form - although this power could be easily re-mapped to over 200bhp for around £300.00. Braking was amazing, but handling in general could have been more sports orientated, however - it was such a good all rounder and a totally capable motorway cruiser. Earlier examples had Recaro interiors which are a really nice touch, there are certain common weak areas of the car such as coilpacks/window regulators, but nothing you cannot sort out with a bit of DIY. Sold mine with over 100k miles and it was still driving like a new car. regularly got over 35mpg
Everything a Golf should be: great building quality, good looks, good handling. I actually like it more than its successor. The quality of this model is better. The sports seats give a great feel to every ride. The auto gearbox is obsolete and too slow to keep up a sporty pace. Materials are well sought out and the overall quality impression is good. The engine is pretty agile and has a low MPG return. Thanks to the 134bhp power supply, a sporty drive never is far away. The breaks should be better, though. They don't give me the direct response I'd expect.
Great car. Quick with the 1.8T. Raised the bar for interior accommodations, along with the same-generation Jettas and Passats.
The most classy Golf ever! The newer Mk V and VI models are for sure good cars, however, they don't appeal to me nearly as much as the Mk IV. This was my first car ever, and was a very pleasant car to own. I actually miss it quite a bit, it would make a sweet "No. 2-car" next to my Volvo V70... ;-)
