Used 2001 Saab 9-5 for Sale near San Diego, CA
The Saab 9-5 sedan received a few additional standard features in 2001. All models now come standard with OnStar and additional turbo gauges. The base level engine, which previously generated 175 horsepower, has also been given a power boost.
The 9-5 price range was fairly narrow, with just $7000 separating the the top tier and entry level models. There were six models to choose from in 2001, with three wagons and three sedans. Both body styles were available in the base 2.3T, mid-level SE, and sporty Aero trims. All models are well-equipped with the luxury basics, including dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, keyless entry, automatic head lamps, heated mirrors, cruise control, a sunroof and a glove box refrigerator. The Gary Fisher Edition of the wagon is no longer available.
The 9-5 has three engine options, which are specified by trim level. The 2.3T is powered by a turbocharged inline four, which now generates 185 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. The top level Aero sedans and wagon also house a 2.3 liter inline four, boosted here for a total output of 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The transmission options are the same. The SE is the only 9-5 style to use a V-6. This 3.0 liter turbocharged engine delivers 200 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, and is only available with a four-speed automatic transmission.
All 9-5s offer strong fuel economy, considering the power supply. The SE has an EPA estimate of 19/26 mpg. Fuel economy for the 2.3 is 19/26 with the automatic and 21/28 mpg with the manual.
Owners and reviewers seem to agree that the 9-5 driving experience is enjoyable, with solid handling, and better-than-average acceleration. test drivers continue to warn about some turbo lag during initial takeoff. The 2.3T reaches 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, while the SE can do it in 7.6. The Aero does this sprint in about six and half seconds. The 9-5's cabin is reported to be well-shielded from wind and engine noise, but many have mentioned some excessive road noise on uneven surfaces.
Favorite 9-5 features include cargo room, fuel economy, and the unique interior layout. Many have expressed dissatisfaction with ergonomics: the cup holder design is ill-conceived and the climate controls are poorly positioned.
4.5 Overall rating
(28 reviews)It has solid acceleration. It is very reliable and has good handling. You can really feel the turbo around the upper RPMs. It is very fun to drive because it handles like a dream and has an extremely smooth ride.
Have had this car for over five years now with minimal trouble and lots of fun driving. The handling compared to the other cars in this class (Volvo, Subaru, etc.) is superior and that largely sold me. On the highway, it is really sweet. Very stable, with more than adequate acceleration (I have the 6 Cylinder). I have long been a fan of the wagon's styling as well. Very clean design that they have kept for a long time, but with minor tweaks still seems modern.
This car has been driven mostly on long trips. Great performance - especially in acceleration and handling. Built to last, no rattles or squeaks. Only selling because I am looking to buy a new 95 - and my wife really wants another Saab!
Overall this had to be the most exciting and fun car to drive. Surprisingly fast and handled like a dream. Putting the car into "Sport" mode made the a accelaration that much better. It also had a "Winter" mode which made the car accelerate at a very slow pace to avoid losing traction during slick weather.
I really like this car, even with 130K+ miles on it. Great pickup when getting on the highway, very comfortable, rides nicely, and has many small features that I like. Have had it 11 years now, and not ready to trade it in. Love this car.
