Overview

Kia's latest American offering is the Spectra hatchback, introduced last year as a sportier and more versatile version of its flagship Kia Sephia compact sedan. The 2001 Spectra comes in two trims, the base GS and the more sports-styled GSX. Both are powered by a 125-hp, 1.8-liter I4 engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission. A 4-speed auto tran is also available. Dual front airbags are standard, but ABS brakes are optional.
The 2001 Spectra features few new additions this year. A tethered gas cap comes with the GSX, and both models get dual vanity mirrors and a coin holder. While the GS is very base, with only intermittent wipers, a radio, and tinted glass, the GSX gets a rear spoiler, side sill extensions, air dams, sports cloth seats, a leather wrapped wheel, a rear window wiper, air conditioning, and power windows and locks. Most of these are options for the GS. Rear seats split-fold 60/40, providing an 11.6 cubic foot cargo area in this hatchback. What gives the 2001 Spectra an appealing look is that it is shaped more like a stylish sedan with a sloped rear roofline. The only hint of a hatch comes when you open the liftgate.
Also new this year is Kia's 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain and 5-year/50,000 mile basic warranty, which includes unlimited roadside assistance. Combined with the affordable price tag, that makes the 2001 Spectra an attractive purchase for families on a budget or first-time car buyers, like college students. Owners report decent gas mileage, and they love the huge trunk for a compact. The ride and handling feel smooth and precise. Unfortunately, Kia was still working out the quality kinks, and the 2001 Spectra is in the repair shop a lot. Other problems include cheap plastic parts that break easily, a dinged up exterior, peeling paint, and slow acceleration when the air conditioning is on or the car is loaded up.

very reliable for long distance travel or across town. Great on gas mileage. AC broke a few years ago and cost of repair costs more than what i want to pay. Its a great starter car. Ive had two cars.

To be a 4-cylinder 1.8L engine, the engine has some power. The car has 148,000 miles on it, and I've had the clutch reconstructed and the alternator replaced. The exterior panels look ugly, while the interior looks decent. Gas mileage is fantastic, 28 to 32 city/hwy. At one point, i got 34 mpg.

This was a pretty good car for a cheap kia, came with side skirts, mags and a wing so that was pretty cool, did have to have exhaust checked a couple of times under warrenty though... got into an accident first week I had it.. girl drove in the drivers side just behind the front wheel. never the same after that.. was pretty good car though... hugh boot for a hatch back.. changed the crappy cd player for a alpine pretty much straight away though..
