Nissan's mid-size SUV may seem a little stuffy and outdated when put up against the newly introduced youthful and outdoors-oriented Xterra, but the 2000 Nissan Pathfinder provides reliable SUV cargo versatility and ride height with the easy of car-like handling -- a combination many soccer moms are looking for. After being updated in 1999, the 2000 Pathfinder is pretty much unchanged. The two rows of seats fit five passengers, though the back seat is probably best suited for children. Seats fold 60/40 for up to 85 cubic feet of cargo space. There are three trim levels, all powered by the same 3.3-liter, 170-hp V6 engine, which feels a bit anemic in an SUV. Next year's model is set to have a bigger 3.5-liter engine with 240-hp. The overwhelming complaint about the 2000 Pathfinder is the underpowered engine and the poor gas mileage (15/19). Other criticisms mention the cramped backseat and small doors that hamper access, and the poor performance of the 4WD. On the plus side, drivers say it handles more like a car, has a smooth ride, and they feel safe inside.
