In 1999, Toyota reintroduced the Camry coupe, which had been missing from the best-selling car's lineup for five years. This time, however, they gave it a distinct look and identity and named it the Camry Solara. The Solara offered drivers everything that made the Camry a best-seller, but with a sportier, swoopy appearance and performance suspension and steering that means it drives more like a sports car than a Camry sedan.

The 1999 Camry Solara came standard with a 2.2 liter, four-cylinder engine. Optional in the SE trim level was a V6, 3.0 liter engine, which came standard in the SLE. Fuel economy is about 20 to 30 miles per gallon, depending on the engine. The 1999 Toyota Camry Solara was one of the few coupes on the market that was available with a manual transmission in the V6. Despite being a two-door coupe, the 1999 Solara still offered a reasonable amount of roominess, and good-sized adults can fit comfortably in the back seat.

Drivers of the 1999 Camry Solara praise the car for its typical Toyota reliability and quality. Some complaints include the expensive price tag, especially compared to the Camry sedan, and the lack of some convenience features like an electronic trunk release.
