Overview

In preparation for the second generation of the Dodge Neon, the 1999 Neon offered very few changes, though Chrysler did claim to have addressed several persistent problems, including head gasket failures and peeling paint. They also claimed to have reduced the road noise and improved the plain-looking interior. Its reliability record held the Neon back from taking the lead in subcompacts, despite being roomier and faster than the competition.
The 1999 Dodge Neon came in Highline, Sport, R/T, and Competition trims, either as a sedan or a coupe. The R/T was by far the sportiest, featuring race car options and design and a dual-cam 2.0-liter, 150-hp engine. The Competition sedan was basically a base model with a package that offered many R/T options.
The Neon always scores high on roominess, especially its backseat, which can fold down to add more cargo space to the trunk. It boasts one of the larger interiors for a subcompact car, and coupled with a smooth suspension, makes for a comfortable ride. Engine power, whether single or twin-cam, gives it a lot of pep, and drivers say it tackles snowy conditions confidently. Despite Chrysler's efforts, owners still complained about the poor repair record for the 1999 Neon. The head gasket failure and overheating issues did not go away. The frameless windows made road noise louder and made it easier to break into the Neon.

I've worked on these cars since 96 so I know them really well. Performance is great for what you pay for them. Cost is good as parts are very cheap and buying a Factory Service manual is cheap plus it helps you to be able to fix the car yourself. www.neons.org is a great site to learn alot about the car.

Performance - there is a great aftermarket available, including motor swaps/build ups. Appearance - with the right wheels and paint anything can look good. Cost - other then regular maintenance items the car owes me nothing, spent 1200 on a replacement motor. when i got the car.

Thought owning a Neon would be fun... this car was a big waste of money. Head Gasket problems, seemed like it was always in the shop. Transmission went.
