Overview

The 1998 SC 300's engine was tweeked for 10 additional lb-ft of torque, but changes were unfortunately headlined by the loss of the remarkable 5-speed transmission. As Lexus attempted to put the SC 300 in line with other models like the ES and LS, they might have sacrificed its best feature, according to many drivers. The automatic transmission was now a 5-speed.
The power plant was still the same inline six, with 225 horsepower and now 220 lb-ft of torque. The SC 300 was fast enough off the line (just over seven seconds to 60 mph) and it navigated tight turns with precision at higher speeds. It accelerated quickly through the higher gears and made the quarter mile in about 16 seconds. The rear wheel layout made it questionable for daily driving in some locations, and many owners have suggested an all-wheel-drive model would eliminate the scary moments in adverse conditions.
Drivers seem to unanimously agree that the SC 300 is an attractive, well-built, and reliable sports coupe. The SC manages a very smooth ride despite stiffer suspension tuning, and effortless steering which helps on tight winding roads. While the SC does have a style that distinguishes it from competition, like the Cadillac El Dorado and BWM M3, it bares a considerably higher price tag. A common criticism among effort reviewers is that the M3 is a far better value performance wise.

only tires and brakes replacement. It is a pleasure to drive.Plenty of pick up and easy to operate.Great looks and positive interior.MPG not exceptional and uses premium gas but well worth it.No squeaks or rattles.Seems to almost never in need of repair or replacement Original Panasonic battery replaced after eleven years. Has 7000 miles and will probably keep it for that many again.

Amazing car. In high school, I wanted to buy one but they were way out of my price range. Now that I finally own one, I have to say I plan on keeping it until it's completely un-driveable. Great engine (Supra's 2JZGE), solid chassis, almost too comfortable (makes me sleepy on long trips), killer sound system (Nakamichi option). Smooth, wide power band, predictable handling (although more body roll than I would like) and decent "road feel" give it a sporty demeanor, while the plush interior and ultra-quiet ride definitely says premium brand. Only real downside is the cost of parts - although maintenance is fairly easy, it seems like the price of every component has been gouged severely to take advantage of the well-to-do (I'm not one of them). Even the gas mileage exceeds my expectations (I average about 2-3mpg above the EPA est). If you're in the market for an entry-level luxury car with some track ability, the SC is definitely worth your while.

I have a '98 SC400 that is in perfect showroom condition, inside and out. Pearl white with all the options. It is a joy to drive and reeks of quality. The design is elegant and timeless. I have a 99 RAV4 for everyday that I also love. I keep the Lexus for longer highway trips and average about 27mpg. I had a 92 SC 400 for ten years in Chicago. Despite traction control and ABS, it would wag its tail on icy roads. I had no mechanical problems with that car and could have kept it longer. I plan to keep my 98 until one of us dies. No tail wagging here in AZ. I don't care for the design of the SC430 and they stopped making the SC400 in 2000. The original window sticker on my car was $62,500, and I could probably get no more than $15,000 now. Hmmm, beautiful 98 Lexus SC400 or new Kia Spectra? No contest. I also believe that one way we can be "green" is not only to buy hybrids, but also to maintain an older car that we use sparingly. It must cost more energy to build a NEW Prius than it ever saves in gas or emissions. Just a thought. If you can find a used SC400 that has been well cared for, buy it and love it. It's a great car.
