In 1996, the Lexus sports coupe added a few additional standard features and options. New to the SC 300 were auto-dimming electrochromic inside and outside rearview mirrors as standard equipment. Additional options included chrome wheels and a one-touch power moonroof. An important note: 1996 and 1997 were the last model years in which the celebrated manual transmission was available on the SC 300.

The sleek ergonomics and exterior design continued to highlight the classic sports car attributes of the SC. However, the SC offered more than a traditional sports car. This was a true touring coupe, which could seat four adults with considerable comfort. The only snag is storage space for long trips. The trunk is small and the back seats can not fold down. Issues of spaciousness still take a backseat to performance. The same 3.0 liter inline six returns, making 225 horsepower and propelling the SC from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds.

Today, the average SC driver is hovering between 125 and 150 thousand miles. Many of them claim that is one of the most reliable sports coupe ever built, and many of the complaints that Mercedes and BWM drivers put forth are quite uncommon for the SC 300. Many drivers report that they are still running with original clutches, brake pads, and struts, despite challenging their cars on a daily basis.
