Lexus added its first ever five-speed automatic transmission to the 1996 GS 300, lending the car a "sportier" feeling. The car continued to be power by a 3.0 liter, six cylinder, 220 horsepower engine. Other improvements included one-touch operation of the moon roof and the acquisition of 1997 side impact standards a year ahead of schedule. New taillights and rear badging were complimented by five new available color choices. One driver spoke for many when he wrote how he loved "the interior layout and the smooth lines of the car." Another claimed the GS 300 was "way ahead of its time for 1996."
