Used 1995 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for Sale near Charlotte, NC
3.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)My family has owned 1992, 1994, and 1995 400E and E420s. The new E-Klasse's do not compare to the W123/W124 platform. Great ride, great handling, incredible build quality, each car managed over 300 000kms with ease, only replaced by a newer version of the car.
Good performing car when it is working; but this car has been a nightmare since 5/08-Over $18,000 in repairs spent as of 12/10, yes I am not kidding; I must have had a louse screw to complete the repairs; for example; in 6/08-r/r-antenna mast, emission parts, brakes, lub and oil at a cost of $2,661.25 (I think I got ripped off a little bit); 8/08-Throttle Actuator, PCV Hose, Shift Linkage Bushing, Distributor Caps @ $1,629.74; 9/08-Engine Mounts @ $660.67; 10/08-r/r Radiator, fan blade, used fan clutch (never buy a used part) $1,423.72; 6/09-Oil Pan Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket, Bosch Plug wire/Set, Power Steering Pump rebuilt @ $2,046.34; 9/09-r/r-Control Arm, Shock Absorbers, OEM-Link Arm, Suspension-Rear Left @ $911; 9/09-Repair Radio Volume Knob (yes they all go out in the orginal radio and I actually found someone to fix it) @ $60; 2/10-r/r camshaft position sensor, r/r-crankshaft position sensor; r/r distributor cap; r/r ignition coil, fuel injector; r/r-vacuum hoses valve cover to intake manifold for parts and labor @ $2,245.08, milage at this time was only 96,879.; 3/10-r/r antenna assembly motor @ $509.98; 5/10-replaced vaccum hose on transmission including trans service @ $155.48; 7/10-replace oil pan and oil sender unit plus lube and oil @ $553.36; 8/10-Replace Wiring Harness (all of the Mercedes need this one to be replace for this year and a few other years) @ $437.55; 11/10-Drive Belt Replaced, Front Pads Replaced, again power steering pump needed repair (should have bought a new one, but under warranty) @ $762.36; 12/10-Transmission currently being rebuilt approx. $1,400 to $1,600; Do not buy a used E420; this car has always been taken care of.
Performance & handling is excellent; On the freeway I get 25 miles to the gallon; Problem is cost of ownership; The parts are very expensive, emission parts such as the Throtle Actuator is $1,200 new that does not include the cost of labor; so you need to shop on the internet for one that is rebuilt or used and they all go out in this model. The radiators go out on this car and again the fan clutch is an expensive item. They never made replacement ignition wire sets for this model, do not take it to a dealer the wiring alone at the dealer is about $700 not including labor and plugs; get the after market wiring for about $300(Bosch); Break jobs are very expensive on this model; electrical issues are fairly common such as the attenna mast or relay switch in the dash along with fuses. As the car gets older you need to adjust the shift linkage (bushing). If you have a big pocket book to keep the car up this car is great otherwise look for something else.
