Great car for the runs to the store and small trips. Dependable vehicle with minor repair being the only problems. Cramped space when working in the engine compartment. Easy to customize with your own styling. College kid friendly without a doubt!

This was another attempt at a "world car" by Ford and was the most successful up to that point, largely because they didn't mess with the terrific handling the European engineers gave it. Arguably Ford's best overall offering at the time, but had a cramped back seat which hurt sales. Crap automatic tranny didn't help either, sapping performance and economy. Get a manual if you can. Still, handling and overall feel rival BMW, believe it or not. Subsequent generations not sold here carried on the Ford DNA, best sampled in the first-generation Focus.

it's a little small, but that car was one of the most reliable I've ever driven

The performance was great, it handled well in the snow regardless of not having traction control. The build quality was good when I had the car, but it tended to overheat which eventually led to the head gasket blowing and my having to junk the car. The exterior appearance was okay; i bought the car used so it a scratches but the interior was perfect. the ride was so comfortable too. It was relatively fun to drive.
