Overview

The 1990 model year was a pivotal moment in the life of the Mazda 323. It was this year that the 323 split into two separate models. The 323 was offered as a hatchback only, and the sedan went on to become the larger, more expensive Protege.
The 1990 323 was available in as the base and SE trims. Upgrading to the SE got cloth (instead of vinyl) upholstery, tinted glass, and an upgraded interior design. Both shared the same engine, a 1.6-liter, 82-horsepower, four-cylinder. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, with a four-speed automatic available as an option. Fuel economy is about 29/37.
Most 1990 323 owners like their cars because they are good little commuter cars that have excellent fuel efficiency and say that with scheduled maintenance, they are quite reliable. Many complain that they are pretty basic and lack many comfort features like A/C and supportive seats. Because they are inexpensive and easy to customize, 1990 Mazda 323s are popular among modification enthusiasts, who equip them with bigger engines and lots of flashy exterior extras.

The 1990 model 323 is a great little car. It's a good looking car, it's very economical and it just keeps going and going and going. My one is a grey color, it has 14in alloys, and looks great. It also has tinted windows as well! Definately worth keeping. A very fun car to drive, it can go just about anywhere.

The first car my folks purchased in america. A classy Mazda, if I ever saw one. A manual, fuel efficient machine. Fast as can be. Fuel efficient in a time of no desperation for fossil fuels. The good old .90 a gallon days. That Mazda got full off of 9 dollars of gas.

Not the fastest car, but maybe that was ok, since I drove it flat out at all times.
