About 2016 Nissan LEAF
overall
A battery upgrade for greater range and a standard quick-charge port for the midrange SL trim bring more real-world usability to Nissan’s all-electric Leaf.
With 6 years under its belt, the Nissan Leaf is getting rather long in the electric tooth. Competitors have populated the automotive landscape with all-electric options matching the Leaf for style and substance, so Nissan has upped battery capacity for the 2016 SV and SL trims for a full 104 miles of range—a 23-mile increase over that of the old battery pack—and added a quick-charge port for the mid-level SV.

Great vehicle for in town, range is limited for distance travel. Compares with Kia Soul EV but I prefer the more aerodynamic shape of the Nissan Leaf.

Basic S model. Price was good but the battery and range leave a lot to be desired. Get only about 80 miles per charge. We use it for local errands only, so works for us. Cant do a round trip to see oye kids that are 40 minutes away. Trying to find ways of getting another 15 miles per charge.

Is the 2016 Nissan LEAF a good car?
The 2016 Nissan LEAF is a mixed but practical choice, with a 3.33/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating that reflect both its strengths and its age. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10. For you, that means the LEAF makes the most sense if you want a straightforward electric hatchback with improved everyday usability rather than the newest EV tech or the most polished driving experience. The market signal is also fairly supportive, with 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2016 Nissan LEAF reliable?
The 2016 Nissan LEAF is described as having about average reliability, and its electric drivetrain brings the kind of simple mechanical layout that can help keep ownership straightforward. The expert notes also point to a useful ownership advantage: the drivetrain carries an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty, and the battery has additional coverage for excessive capacity loss. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is battery degradation, so you should pay close attention to remaining capacity and charging behavior before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Nissan LEAF?
At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery condition, charging equipment, and any signs of prior body damage. Because range and battery health are central to the LEAF’s value, you should also make sure the car still fits your daily driving needs in real-world use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base S trims keep the older battery and its 84-mile range, while SV and SL trims get the upgraded battery with 104 miles of range. The base trim also uses a smaller 5-inch touchscreen, while SV adds a 7-inch screen with navigation and more convenience features.
- Powertrain: The LEAF uses a single electric motor with front-wheel drive. Performance is modest, with 0-60 mph taking more than 10 seconds, but the upgraded battery improves range by 23% and makes the car more usable for daily driving.
- Safety package: The LEAF includes a rear-view camera and the usual antilock brakes plus traction and stability control. It does not include blind-spot monitoring or lane-departure and frontal-collision warning systems.
- Infotainment: The base trim gets a 5-inch touchscreen with Nissan Connect, while SV and SL trims offer a 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, HD Radio, and Nissan Connect EV telematics. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not part of the setup.
- Range & charging: SV and SL trims deliver 104 miles of range, and the battery upgrade is paired with a 30 kWh pack. The quick-charge port can bring the battery to 80% in about 30 minutes, while a 240-volt home setup can cut charging time to about 5 hours with the faster onboard charger.
- Battery health: You should check battery state-of-health carefully, since usable range matters more than the odometer alone. Favor cars that have been charged and used consistently in a normal pattern, and verify how much of the battery warranty remains so you know what protection is still left.
Which 2016 Nissan LEAF trim should I buy?
The 2016 Nissan LEAF is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, SL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the older battery and 84-mile range. It still gives you a rear-view camera, keyless entry and ignition, heated seats, automatic climate control, and a touchscreen, but it is the least appealing choice if you want the LEAF’s best range and charging convenience.
- SV: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the upgraded battery with 104 miles of range, the 7-inch touchscreen with navigation, the quicker 6.6kW onboard charger, and the quick-charge port. It also brings more comfort and convenience features, making it the most balanced choice.
- SL: This is the most feature-rich trim, adding LED headlights, leather upholstery, heated seats front and back, foglights, and the solar panel. It makes sense if you want the most equipment, but the SV is the smarter buy for many used shoppers.
The safety package is limited across the lineup, so don’t expect advanced driver-assistance features on any trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Nissan LEAF?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market for the 2016 Nissan LEAF, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 97 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 69.1% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2016 Nissan LEAF safe?
The 2016 Nissan LEAF earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Poor rating in IIHS small-overlap crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The LEAF includes front, front-side, and full-length curtain airbags, along with antilock brakes and traction and stability control. It also gets a rear-view camera, but it lacks blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure and frontal-collision warning systems. The main safety caveat is the poor small-overlap result, so you should not assume the car’s EV packaging automatically makes it a standout safety pick.
Should I buy a 2016 Nissan LEAF or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Nissan gave the SV and SL trims a battery upgrade that increased range to 104 miles, which helps address one of the LEAF’s biggest usability concerns.
