About 1978 Jeep Cherokee
Overview

This rugged, reliable full-size utility vehicle is a lasting favorite. The 1978 Jeep Cherokee isn't a fancy soccer-mom SUV with all the bells and whistles: it's a sturdy off-road monster, with plenty of power and torque under the hood to get its two and a half tons of Detroit steel down the highway, or up a mountainside, with ease.
The '78 Jeep Cherokee was offered in both two-door and four-door models. The interior had a no-frills look, but the Cherokee Chief extras package did offer some decor touches as well as the power steering and other performance enhancers.
One of the '78 Cherokee's biggest selling points was its powerful, torquey engine options. The 1978 Cherokee shipped with a 258 cubic inch, 4.2 liter AMC inline-6 engine. Drivers looking for more power could upgrade to a choice of two V-8 mills: either a 360 cubic inch, 5.9 liter or a 401 cubic inch, 6.6 liter plant clocked at 280 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque.
Of course, all that power comes at a premium at the gas pumps; the '78 Cherokee is kind of a gas guzzler. But it might seem worth it for the power and heft you get!

When I was 7, my grandpa got the 401 cubic inch four barrel version in the Sun Orange option. After he passed away, grandma gave it to me. Well cared for and with only 63,000 miles on it, this is a rare classic beauty. Almost all of the 63,000 miles were off road, though you'd never know looking at it or driving it. At the ripe old age of thirty, she handles interstate speeds, goes four-wheelin, starts up and idles beautifully, shifts flawlessly, burns no oil, and still has a nice glossy shine on the original sun orange paint job. I recently drove it from New Mexico to Louisiana nonstop, and other than a replacement of the original alternator, it drove just like it was new. I will be restoring the well worn interior as close to original as possible, but the engine and exterior need virtually no work at all.
