Overview

For 1977, Ford downsized the Thunderbird dramatically. Reinvented as a mid-sized car, on a platform based on the now-discontinued Torino sedan, the 1977 Ford Thunderbird was a zippier, sportier breed of bird than its immediate predecessors. The 'Torino Bird' slimmed down dramatically, dropping 900+ pounds of weight (quite a makeover!) Ford also trimmed the list price by almost $3,000. Buyers responded with delight, and sales rose significantly.
The sporty new '77 Thunderbird hadn't lost all of its luxury stylings, though. Inside the cabin, plush comfort was still the focus, with bucket seats and touches of chrome. Sharper, squarer lines were the hallmark of the 1977 Thunderbird's exterior redesign (echoing the boxy, shoulder-padded, razor-edged look just then hitting the fashion runways).
Downsizing made its impact under the hood as well. The '77 Ford Thunderbird shipped off the line with a smaller engine than the previous year's. The standard engine was a 5.0 liter, 302 cubic inch small-block V-8; buyers had the option of upgrading to a 5.8 liter, 351 cubic inch or 6.6 liter, 400 cubic inch V8. This was definitely a disappointment to drivers looking to the T-Bird as an ultimate muscle car, especially for folks who had come to love its giant mill on drag strips and stock tracks. On the other hand, the new TBird was so much lighter that few drivers noticed a loss in everyday performance.
And the 1977 T-Bird was so much easier to feed! Its improved fuel efficiency made a big difference at the pumps, and that was as strong a selling point in the Carter Administration as it is today.

Performance: Since the car is from the late 70's the performance lacks a little bit due to the introduction of emission controls under the hood. Build Quality: The car is 32 years old and has no major/moderate problems. Appearance: the car is just drop dead sexy Cost of ownership: It is expensive, I only get 8 m.p.g. Fun Factor: The car has a lot of torque, so it's pretty fun to drive.

this was my very favorite car, it had the most comfortable interior i ever had and the exterior allowed for alot of flying down the freeways maintenance was basically standard oil changes, spark plugs, nothing extraordinary, added to the fun for me had a cb radio in this one and used to check out the smokey reports before i flew down the freeway, was an awesome ride the most memorable car of my life, IF you ever find one NEVER LOAN IT TO ANYONE, my best friend of that time borrowed it and totalled it - saddest thing that i can think of right now

This really does feel like a boat to drive, and is about the same size as one. You can barely tell you're even on the road. The car has no road feel, is extremely quiet, and comfortable. The transmission is so smooth you cant tell when it shifts. The engine is pretty unreal too, the 351M is a great engine all around, and it can be stroked easily. It is very easy to work on. The only really electronic device on the car, the cold start system, has been my only problem, so I just took it off. Some people seem to think its too big, but I've never really had too much of a problem with that. For a car this large, it has great acceleration, and handles better than expected. The car is exceptionally cool in every aspect, especially with vacuum headlight covers, retractible windshield wipers, seating for 10, and 20 square feet of chrome.
