For 1970, the Volkwagen Beetle was available with a new engine -- the 1600 four-cylinder air-cooled engine, which provided 57 horsepower. Like all VW Beetle engines, it was mounted in the rear to provided traction for the rear wheels, and was relatively easy to maintain for do-it-yourself auto owners.
Other new features for the 1970 Beetle were larger turn signals, larger tail lights with side reflectors on the housing, dual air intake slots on the engine lid, and reconfigured third and fourth gears on the transmission (a late-year upgrade). In addition, a buzzer sound alerted drivers when the doors were left open and the key was left in the ignition.
Standard features included swiveling sun visors, coat hooks, assist straps, an automatic windshield washer, an overhead light, folding rear seats, and luggage space under the front hood and in a three-foot carpeted compartment behind the rear seats. A convertible top was optional.

(30 reviews)One of the most fun cars I've ever owned. Great car to teach my kids to work on. Parts are cheap and easy to find. I'm sure this will not be the last bug i own. I've been wanting to try a baja version of this car.
Love the style, the fun,the attention given whereever I go, comfort not primery here, long life if maintained, attention to valve adjustment every 3000 miles is not an option, a must do for long life along with oil changes, easy engines to rebuild
Great Original piece of history.... He Looks Good For 38 Years Old!!
Likes: Engineering, build quality, durabillity, fun-ness, efficiency, ease-of-use and repair, classic appeal and popularity, space considering it's actual width/length, layout of the dash and space-saving simplicity of the whole car design, light weight, easy to handle and light steering Dislikes: Being worried about the cooling efficiency on a hot summers day. The rattles the engine makes. Being easy to break into Being blown off the road by a strong gust of wind
performance: handling is good Build Quality: strong body & suspension Appearance: Poor in interior & Strange shape in exterior Cost of Ownership: Gas mileage is Mid ,Maintenance need more than any car to take good performance. Fun Factor - It is very fun car to drive and has a good style.
