Who Makes Ineos Cars?

Ineos Automotive is the brainchild of British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, one of the richest people in the UK. He founded the company to produce a car that would fill the gap left by the original Land Rover Defender, which went out of production in 2016. Billed as a ‘stripped back, utilitarian, hard-working 4X4’, the Ineos Grenadier is the result. Production started in 2022 at a factory in Hambach, France.

What Sort of Vehicles Does Ineos Make?

Ineos makes essentially one vehicle – the Grenadier SUV. It’s an old-school off-roader inspired by the original Land Rover Defender – not the swanky new one – that has a traditional (if outdated) ladder-frame chassis construction and the kind of ground clearance and hardware you need for serious off-road capability. It’s available with a four-door ‘Station Wagon’ body, or as a four-door pick-up called Quartermaster.

In the US, all versions have a 3.0-liter BMW-sourced gasoline engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard, Fieldmaster and Trialmaster trim levels provide varying levels of ruggedness and luxury; as of January 2025 there’s also a limited-edition Grenadier 1924 model that’s a collaboration with British clothing brand Belstaff.

In February 2024, Ineos announced plans to launch a new SUV called the Ineos Fusilier in 2027. Slightly smaller than the Grenadier but with a similar character, it would be available with either a pure-electric powertrain or as a range-extended EV. In September 2024, however, the new model was put on hold indefinitely.
