Who Makes Ferrari Cars?

Ferrari is one of the most famous car brands in the world, known for its motorsport heritage and for its beautiful, high-end sports cars. Founded by Enzo Ferrari in the late 1930s and based in Maranello, Italy, since 1943, Ferrari continues to build all of its cars there. Although Italian carmaker Fiat had a controlling interest in the brand for more than fifty years, Ferrari has been a publicly owned company since 2016. Currently, the single largest shareholder (with nearly 25%) is Exor N.V. – a holding company owned by the Agnelli family, founders of Fiat. Piero Ferrari, son of Enzo, has a 10.5% share.

What Sort of Vehicles Does Ferrari Make?

Ferrari makes sports cars – always has and always will. Its cars have always offered everyday usability and practicality, however, and while some offer more in the way of luxury others have a more hardcore, motorsport-ready focus. Countless limited-edition and bespoke special models have been built over the years, too.

The current lineup is a case in point. The core models are two-door sports cars, available in hard-top or convertible form. Things kick off with the 296 GTB and 296 GTS, then there’s the SF90 Stradale and SF90 Spider. The Roma and Roma Spider are still outrageously fast but have more of a cruiser vibe, while the recently launched 12Cilindri and 12Cilindri Spider are hugely powerful ‘grand tourer’ models. Then there’s the Ferrari Purosangue, referred to by the brand as the ‘first ever four-door, four-seater car in Ferrari’s history’. It’s low and (incredibly) sporty, but anyone outside of Maranello would probably call it a crossover or SUV. Ferrari’s limited-edition ‘Special Series’ and ‘Icona’ models are hugely expensive, built in very small numbers and most are sold-out. Its new flagship model, the F80 hypercar, is due to be introduced for the 2026 model year, and will cost more than $3,000,000.
