The Best Off-Road Vehicles in 2025

by John Graham

For serious off-road enthusiasts, it's not just about looking rugged — it's about tackling rock crawling, mud pits, steep trails, and even high-speed desert runs without hesitation.

While many crossover and SUV vehicles are styled to appear adventurous, not all of them are built to venture far off the beaten path. The ones we’ve assembled here have everything you need to get across the toughest terrain, though. From trail-ready SUVs to factory-lifted pickup trucks, here are the best off-road vehicles available in 2025.

The Best Off-Road Vehicles in 2025

2025 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X

Jeep Wrangler

No other SUV has the heritage of the Jeep Wrangler – it’s the original off-road SUV, with a history stretching all the way back to the Willys Jeep of 1941. Every Wrangler has excellent ground clearance and awesome off-road ability, but for maximum ruggedness you need the Rubicon model, which has chassis upgrades and a heavier-duty four-wheel drive system. There are also front and rear locking differentials, electronic sway bar disconnects, rock rails, 33-inch tires, and a crawl ratio made for technical terrain. All of which should help you to get to places most other vehicles can’t.

For even more performance on or off-road, the Rubicon 392 features a 470-hp V8, as well an MSRP of more than $100,000.

Ford Bronco Raptor

Ford Bronco

While it can’t match the Jeep Wrangler for backstory, the Ford Bronco has plenty of heritage and similarly appealing retro looks. Introduced in 2021 as the first Bronco model in 25 years, the modern Ford Bronco has quickly proved itself to be a formidable rival to the Wrangler and offers similar go-anywhere ability.

Features like Trail Turn Assist, locking front and rear differentials, and the Sasquatch package with 35-inch tires make it incredibly trail-worthy, while the Bronco Raptor takes things even further with a widened stance, high-performance suspension, and over 400 horsepower.

2025 Land Cruiser

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is renowned for its robustness and reliability. In fact, it’s the vehicle of choice parts of the world where roads are few and far between and breaking down isn’t an option. The latest model, on sale since 2023, blends modern tech with a retro look and more on-road refinement than before. It remains an off-road beast, however, with specs including a full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) system, a center-locking differential, underbody protection, and a Multi-Terrain Select system that adjusts the various electronic systems to suit different off-road surfaces and situations.

If you want all the off-road smarts of the Land Cruiser but crave a bit more luxury, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail is happy to oblige. It’s a more upscale derivative of the Land Cruiser that uses most of the same structure and parts but has redesigned front and rear ends and a more upscale interior with extra high-end features.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter

Toyota 4Runner

Crucially, the latest 4Runner matches the old car’s formidable ability when you leave the highway, and with its rugged, body-on-frame design, the 4Runner is a favorite among serious off-roaders. Trailhunter trim is the most off-road-capable in the lineup, built for technical terrain with features like a locking rear differential, skid plates, off-road tires, and trail-tuned suspension. The TRD Pro trim leans more toward faster-paced off-road driving, with Fox shocks and an aggressive appearance package.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter

Toyota Tacoma

The fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma was introduced for the 2024 model year. New from the ground up, it brought Toyota’s popular truck bang up to date, while retaining the previous model’s ruggedness. Standard models got a big hike in power and torque thanks to a new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, while a new hybrid version of the same powertrain added even more of both, with impressive outputs of 323-326 horspower (depending on model) and 465 lb/ft of torque.

The off-road focused versions of the Tacoma are the Trailhunter and TRD Pro. 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Review Lead In

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

There’s nothing out there quite like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (also known as the G-Wagen). Its blend of high-end luxury, retro charm and outright off-road ability gives it a unique place in the market, as does a price tag that runs from about £148,000 to £186,000.

What do you get for the money, apart from those iconic looks? Well, there are traditional off-road essentials such as a ladder-frame chassis and good ground clearance, along with three locking differentials. And while it may look little different to the G-Wagens of days gone by, the latest model is full of high-tech features to help any off-road excursions. A choice of Trail, Rock and Sand drive modes optimise the characteristics of the engine, steering, transmission, suspension and stability control to suit each situation and there’s also a ‘Transparent Hood’ function that uses external cameras to create a real-time view of what’s underneath the front of the car onto the display screen.
