Toyota's certified preowned (CPO) program has been around since 1996, and the company says it has sold over eight million CPO vehicles in that time, making it one of the oldest and most successful of any manufacturer certification programs.
Toyota now offers two levels of certification: Gold and Silver.
Gold Certified vehicles must meet the following requirements:
- Be within the last 6 model years
- Have 85,000 miles or less on the odometer
- Pass a quality assurance inspection
- Have a clean Carfax vehicle history report
Silver Certified vehicles must meet the following requirements:
- Be within the last 10 model years
- Have between 60,000 and 125,000 miles on the odometer (outside of Gold eligibility parameters)
- Pass a quality assurance inspection
- Have a clean Carfax vehicle history report
All Toyota models are eligible for the CPO program if they meet the requirements above. The Mirai fuel-cell vehicle is available only through dealers in California, and only to residents of the state that live or work near a hydrogen fueling station.
Warranties
Toyota certified used vehicles come with warranty coverage that varies by certification level. Both Gold and Silver warranties are transferable without extra charge and are honored at over 1,400 Toyota dealers in the United States and Canada. The company offers extended warranties and vehicle service agreements as well.
Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty (Gold Only)
Gold Certified vehicles come with a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive warranty that covers repair or replacement of components that fail during normal use. The coverage applies to equipment that fails due to defect in materials or construction and may not apply if you’ve modified or misused your vehicle.
You can also purchase a vehicle service agreement (VSA) that extends the comprehensive warranty beyond the original 12-month period. Pricing varies per vehicle, but the VSA includes additional benefits outside of standard warranty coverage, including roadside assistance, substitute transportation, travel protection, and full transferability of the extended warranty.
Powertrain Warranty
Gold Certified vehicles include a 7-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. Silver Certified vehicles include a 12-month/12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. Both are completely transferable to any future owners of the vehicle and have no deductible for service visits. The warranty covers items such as:
- Engine components
- Automatic and manual transmissions
- Axle components
- Hybrid/fuel-cell components
Additional Warranties
Toyota offers an extensive line of hybrid vehicles and also sells a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle in certain markets. The company’s warranty coverage is different for these vehicles, and it includes an 8-year/100,000-mile fuel-cell warranty that covers fuel-cell components, hydrogen tanks, air compressors, ECUs, and the power management control module. It also includes an 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid vehicle battery warranty that covers the battery systems. This warranty is transferable at no cost.
Perks
Roadside Assistance
Gold Certified vehicles include roadside assistance for up to 7 years or 100,000 miles. Silver Certified vehicles include roadside assistance for 12 months or 12,000 miles. Coverage includes flat tires, lockout assistance, jump starts, and towing for mechanical breakdowns or collision. Owners can also have fuel delivered if needed, up to 3 gallons and no more than twice per month. Toyota offers reimbursement for towing costs to the nearest service facility. This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
Special Financing
Toyota CPO vehicles are eligible to receive standard new-car financing rates in select regions. Special rates and incentives are sometimes available, and financing can be done with Toyota’s in-house financial services department.
