BMW allows most of its vehicles to be certified by franchise dealers for sale under the company’s certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle program.

BMW vehicles go through a series of checks and updates before being sold under the CPO program:

• Maintenance history must be brought up to date • Any third-party parts are swapped for OEM BMW parts • The vehicle must have more than 300 miles but less than 60,000 miles on the odometer • The vehicle must be road tested • The history report for the vehicle can’t show any major collisions or accidents

Warranties

BMW CPO vehicles come with warranties that extend coverage beyond what is offered from the factory. Assuming the vehicle is still covered under the original 4-year/50,000-mile warranty that it had when new, the BMW Certified Warranty adds an additional year and unlimited miles to that coverage, for a total of 5 years and no mileage limit.

The company doesn’t separate its coverage into bumper-to-bumper and powertrain like some manufacturers. Instead, it offers a list of items that are not covered:

• Common wear items like brake components, spark plugs, wiper blades, and tires • Manual- and SMG-transmission clutch assemblies • Batteries and other standard upkeep items • Oil changes and wheel alignments • Most suspension components • Interior bulbs and most trim pieces

The company also says that any non-original parts or modifications to the vehicle won’t be covered under the certified pre-owned warranty.

Extended Warranty
BMW offers three levels of extended coverage above and beyond the CPO warranty. Coverage is available for both new and CPO BMW vehicles, and is broken down into Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain Plus levels. Certified pre-owned vehicles can have their warranty coverage extended to 7 years for everything from the engine to the infotainment system with the Platinum package.

Transferability
BMW’s CPO warranties are transferable to subsequent owners, but requires that a documentation package and an application be submitted to transfer: • Ownership and mileage records • A notarized seller agreement that affirms the vehicle’s certified status • A $200 warranty transfer fee

The company also requires that the vehicle be sold in a private sale and that it was sold on or after January 1, 2014.

Perks

Roadside Assistance
BMW CPO vehicles come with roadside assistance in all 50 states, Canada and Puerto Rico, and covers anyone driving. Service is offered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and coverage extends to 6 years from the original in-service date of the vehicle with no mileage limitations. Assistance can include:

• Towing services • Battery jump starts • Fuel or fluid delivery at the driver’s expense for materials • Tire-change assistance • Lock-out services • Trip-interruption benefits

Because there are problems that don’t necessarily quality as an emergency, BMW offers a remote vehicle diagnostics service that uses telematics to read vehicle data and warning messages. The Advanced Mobility Group can deliver help by phone when problems arise that don’t require an in-person visit from roadside assistance. If you find yourself stranded, BMW will help arrange a ride and can assist with hotel accommodations. The company offers limited trip-interruption reimbursement benefits of up to $1,000 per incident.

Special Financing
BMW offers special rates and terms for its CPO vehicles, sometimes as low as 0.99 percent.
