What’s New for the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek
The Subaru Crosstrek entered its current generation in 2024 and receives a few updates for 2026. The base 152 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been dropped, replaced by a better 2.5-liter unit — though the base price increased by only about $500. Top trims now get a standard heated steering wheel. Finally, the Crosstrek Hybrid is new for 2026, though we review that model separately.
Design
The Crosstrek is based on the Impreza subcompact hatchback, sharing the same basic body, though it claims crossover, rather than car status thanks to its raised ride height and black plastic body cladding. Base versions come with 17-inch wheels, and 18-inch wheels are also available. The Wilderness trim’s more rugged wheels and copper accents add a lot to the overall effect, though it’s an expensive upgrade. Since it’s a small car on platform shoes, the design suffers from the same inherent drawbacks, most notably a snug second row and cargo space that’s good for a car but subpar for an SUV. However, it’s still a fairly versatile vehicle with plenty of charm.
Powertrain
For 2026, the Crosstrek is available with just one powertrain, as the weaker former base version has been culled from the lineup. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, and it’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), creating an acceptable amount of power. All-wheel drive (AWD) comes as standard, along with hill descent control. Most upgraded trims get Subaru’s selectable drive modes for different terrains and driving conditions, such as Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. The Crosstrek is rated for 27 mpg city/34 highway/29 combined, though the Wilderness’ tuned transmission and all-terrain tires sacrifice a couple of mpg.

Interior
The Crosstrek seats five, though the cabin feels basic in lower trims — gray or black cloth upholstery, comfortable front seats, and limited upgrade options beyond heated seats and a heated steering wheel. The pricier Wilderness trim steps things up with Subaru's easy-clean StarTex upholstery and contrast stitching, with a power moonroof available at extra cost.
Technology
The base Crosstrek gets a pair of seven-inch touchscreen displays, one for infotainment and one for climate control. All other versions get an 11.6-inch vertically oriented tablet-like display. It has crisp graphics and quick responses, and it’s flanked by physical controls for frequently used functions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired in base form and wireless in trims with the big display; higher trims also add standard wireless charging. Most models get a basic stereo system, but the Wilderness trim is available with a package that adds a Harman Kardon audio unit.
Safety
At the time of writing, the 2026 Crosstrek has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As for Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, the Crosstrek earns mostly Good scores. Standard features include a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, forward automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and a rear-seat alert system. Options include reverse automatic emergency braking, automatic emergency steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.
