What’s New for the 2026 MINI Cooper

Following a full redesign for 2025, the 2026 MINI Cooper receives minor updates. The mid-range Cooper S is now available with the John Cooper Works (JCW) styling package, and key functionality via a smartphone app. There’s also a 1965 Victory Edition, available exclusively with the two-door JCW model, which features styling that pays homage to the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally.

Design

Bright colors, distinctive alloy wheels, and flashy lighting are unmistakable MINI traits, as are the multitude of styling options. The 2025 redesign went easy on the exterior, with changes to the lighting, bumpers, and grille. For 2026, a new JCW exterior package is available for the mid-tier Cooper S, adding an exclusive aero body kit and wheels.

Powertrain

Though the MINI Cooper is available with three powertrain ratings, all use the same engine and transmission: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The base Cooper is rated at 161 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The Cooper S makes 201 hp and 221 lb-ft, and the JCW is rated at 228 hp and 280 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard across the lineup. The MINI Cooper used to be one of the few small vehicles you could count on to provide a manual transmission, which truly highlighted the car’s linear power delivery and agile handling. Now, MINI only offers the automatic, which is at least quick and slick.

Interior

The two-door Cooper seats four, and the four-door Cooper seats five. In both cases, the Cooper is more spacious than it looks. Standard features include heated front seats and a combination of cloth and synthetic upholstery, with power-adjustable front seats and synthetic leather upholstery available as options. Last year's redesign was a logical evolution of MINI’s sporty, retro vibe, featuring a thick-rimmed steering wheel, rounded-off trim panels, and curated themes that coordinate ambient lighting and display color palettes. The two-door Cooper offers 8.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 34.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The four-door’s cargo specs are 13.1 and 40 cubic feet, respectively.

Technology

The MINI Cooper’s unique design is taken to extremes in its tech equipment. Case in point: the MINI’s 9.4-inch circular touchscreen, which sits in the middle of the dash. This display features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but it also houses nearly all of the car’s controls and functions within nested menus. The unusual shape and convoluted interface make for a steep learning curve. Options include wireless charging, augmented reality navigation, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

Safety

The MINI Cooper lineup includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and a safe-exit assist system. Buyers will have to pay extra for features such as a surround-view camera system and even basics such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitor. This feels like nickel-and-diming on a car that’s already expensive for what it is. At the time of writing, the redesigned MINI Cooper has not been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
