2026 BMW XM Pricing, Specs, and Release Date

by Kirk Bell

The 2026 BMW XM occupies a unique spot in the automotive market as it attempts to be all things to all luxury buyers. It’s a big, roomy plug-in hybrid SUV that's incredibly powerful but not all that efficient, with multiple personalities often at odds with each other and a sky-high price tag. Rivals include everything from the Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 to the Aston Martin DBX and the Lamborghini Urus.

2026 BMW XM Preview - summary

What’s New for the 2026 BMW XM

The 2026 XM lineup is reduced to just one model known as the XM Label, with a maximum AC charging speed of 11 kilowatts (up from 7.4 kW) thanks to a larger onboard charger. Outside, the XM Label has new welcome lighting animation, while the interior offers three new design themes comprising new Merino leather colors complemented by black or brown trim.

Design

The XM cuts an imposing stance. It sits tall and upright, with long windows, broad and sharply defined rear hips, and large 23-inch wheels on low-profile rubber. Up front is an imposing version of the BMW twin-kidney grille flanked by skinny LED headlights. Overall, the design is busy with lots of cutlines and creases, especially on the nose.

Powertrain

The plug-in hybrid powertrain in the 2026 XM consists of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that produces 577 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. It’s hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission that's also home to an electric motor that makes 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Total output measures 738 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, all of which flows through a rear-biased all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. A 19.2-kWh battery provides 30 miles of electric driving range; thereafter, the XM averages an EPA-estimated 14 mpg combined. With the battery, it’s rated at 47 MPGe.

Interior

The five-passenger, two-row XM is luxurious inside, with quilted Merino leather upholstery, leather and carbon-fiber trim, and an Alcantara headliner. There's 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which is useful but not much for such a large SUV. This expands to 64.3 cubic feet when the rear seat is folded down.

Technology

The XM’s tech features consist of a curved display made up of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, gesture control, and a drive recorder. A digital key, BMW Connected Music, and BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant voice control with natural speech control are also standard with every 2026 XM. A Bowers & Wilkins sound system provides a high-end audio experience.

Safety

BMW equips the XM with a full suite of active safety technology including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active blind-spot monitors, and automatic parking. It also features traffic-jam assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a semi-autonomous highway driving system, a surround-view camera system, and adaptive LED and automatic high-beam headlights.
