While it's mechanically similar to the 3 Series, the 4 Series has sportier styling and a more aggressive stance. Primary competitors include the now-discontinued Audi A5, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Mercedes-Benz CLE-Class, and the Genesis G70. The 2026 4 Series is available in Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible body styles.

What’s New for the 2026 BMW 4 Series
The second-generation BMW 4 Series received a refresh in 2025 that included interior and exterior design tweaks, updated four- and six-cylinder engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, and new exterior lighting designs, so the 2026 model is largely a carryover.
Design
The 2026 BMW 4 Series features unmistakable front-end styling, with slim headlights and a vertical BMW kidney grille. The 430i models offer a Sport “classic” BMW design or the M Sport design option, which includes 19-inch wheels, the Shadowline exterior trim, and an M steering wheel along with the aerodynamic kit and the rear spoiler. Standard wheels on the 430i are 18 inches, but 19-inch wheels are available and become standard on the M440i. Buyers who opt for 19-inch wheels can choose from a variety of two-tone and jet-black finishes.
Powertrain
The 2026 BMW 4 Series is available with two powertrains, both with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The 430i is equipped with a 255-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder-engine, and the M440i gets a turbocharged inline six-cylinder-engine with 386 hp. Both vehicles come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive (RWD), while BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD) is available. Fuel economy ranges from 25 mpg city/32 mpg highway to 28/36 mpg, depending on the configuration, and BMW recommends using premium fuel.

Interior
Depending on the variant, the 2026 BMW 4 Series can seat up to four or five adults. Though headroom and legroom are similar for both the two- and the four-door hardtop models, the Gran Coupe has a little more space for passengers, plus significantly more cargo space courtesy of its liftback design (the Coupe has a traditional trunk). The Gran Coupe has 16.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a maximum capacity of 45.6 cubic feet, whereas the Coupe measures 12 cubic feet and about 30 cubic feet respectively. Standard seating surfaces are leatherette in both the 430i and M440i models and traditional leather is available. There are also several color configurations with both upholstery options, and a sunroof is standard on Coupe and Gran Coupe models.
Technology
The focal point of the dash is the BMW Curved Display, which houses both the 12.3-inch gauge cluster and 14.9-inch infotainment screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are cloud-based navigation, wireless phone charging, BMW’s voice assistant, and a 10-speaker audio system. The 4 Series is equipped with the BMW Operating System 8.5, which provides QuickSelect functionality and faster infotainment processing speeds. Available tech features include a power tailgate, remote engine start, head-up display, a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround system, an augmented-reality view for navigation, the ability to use a phone as a key, a drive recorder, a surround-view camera system, hands-free highway driving, and hands-free park assist.
Safety
Every 2026 BMW 4 Series comes standard with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, and front and rear parking sensors. Available features include adaptive cruise control, active lane-keep assist with side-collision avoidance, evasion assist, a hands-free traffic-jam assist, and automatic reverse braking. At the time of writing, neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had crash-tested any version of the BMW 4 Series.
