The Honda Civic Type R has been around since 1997, but we didn’t get the first Type R in the U.S. until 2017. It skipped the 2022 model year before returning in 2023 as a completely redesigned model. The 2025 Honda Civic Type R competes in the hot hatch segment with the Toyota GR Corolla, the Hyundai Elantra N, and the Volkswagen Golf R.

What’s New for the 2025 Honda Civic Type R

The 2025 Honda Civic Type R is a carryover model with no significant changes. The last significant update it received was in 2023, when it returned as an all-new model after a year off. The styling was more conservative than Type Rs past, and the latest model also heralded improved cooling for the brakes, wider front and rear tracks, more power, and superior technology.

Design

Based on the platform of the 11th generation Civic, the 2025 Honda Civic Type R takes big styling cues from its conventional sibling. However, the flared wheel arches add 3.5 inches to the car’s width, so Type R looks much wider. Additionally, this souped up hatch has a unique grille, red badging, and door sills—as well as the big rear wing and a triple exhaust tailpipe. The Type R comes with 19-inch matte-black alloy wheels and 19-inch forged alloy wheels are available. While there aren’t any appearance packages on the Type R, there is an R Performance package that includes a carbon fiber wing and the forged alloy wheels.

Powertrain

The 2025 Honda Civic Type R gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Enthusiasts will rejoice, because the only transmission available is a six-speed manual. Compared with the Volkswagen Golf R and Toyota GR Corolla, which are all-wheel drive, Type R is front-wheel drive only. Fuel economy isn’t the priority with this performance model, and it gets an EPA estimated city/highway/combined of 22/28/24 mpg. This powertrain also requires premium fuel.

Interior

Designed to get your heart racing, the interior of the 2025 Honda Civic Type R is available in just one color: red. The seating surfaces are a suede-effect fabric, designed to keep you in one place during spirited driving. With its focus on performance, the Type R only seats four, and behind the rear seats, you have 24.5 cubic feet of cargo volume. The R Interior Driver’s package includes illuminated door sills, a leather shift knob, and an Alcantara suede steering wheel. It’s also worth noting that the Type R doesn’t have a sunroof to prioritize weight reduction.

Technology

While the focus is on performance for the spicy Type R, there's still plenty of room for tech. The 2025 Honda Civic Type R features a nine-inch color touchscreen display, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Type R also includes a built-in data logger to monitor performance, along with a lap timer, tire friction data, engine and oil temperatures, boost pressure, and a g-meter. It’ll even allow you to look back at your driving data mapped to the track and analyze your overall skill. Navigation, a premium 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a wireless charger are all standard.

Safety

Even with its performance focus, the 2025 Honda Civic Type R takes time for safety, and Honda Sensing safety equipment is standard. This includes features such as road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lake keep assist, automatic high beams, a driver attention monitor, blind spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert. The Type R hasn’t been crash tested by either the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. However, the conventional Honda Civic Hatchback gets an IIHS Top Safety Pick + award and an overall five-Star Rating from the NHTSA.
