The Nissan Versa is one of the few subcompact cars on the market, after most automakers have culled the most affordable models from their lineups. The only true competitors to the Versa are the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Kia Rio.

What’s New for the 2024 Nissan Versa
The Nissan Versa carries over unchanged for 2024, following a 2020 redesign and a 2023 refresh that brought updated styling and more features. The Versa is available in three trim levels, and the base S model holds the distinction of being the least expensive new car for sale in the United States, undercutting the Mitsubishi Mirage and Kia Rio by a few hundred dollars.
Design
The 2024 Nissan Versa is a scaled-down version of the brand’s standard sedan design, like a minuscule Sentra or Altima. That helps the Versa look more premium than its rivals. It features the bladed signature Nissan grille up front, and while the base model gets just 15-inch steel wheels, other Versa trims can be dressed up with 16- or 17-inch alloys.
Powertrain
The same powertrain comes standard across the 2024 Versa lineup. Nissan equips a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine rated for 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, matched with front-wheel drive (FWD). The base Versa S gets a five-speed manual transmission, though the other two trims come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Versa is rated for up to 32 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.

Interior
The Versa’s four-door sedan body opens up to reasonable passenger space, even in the second row. None of the cars in this segment are particularly spacious, but the Versa isn’t as much of a penalty box as it looks. Most Versa trims have a 15-cubic-foot trunk, though the base trim falls a little short of that figure. Cloth upholstery comes standard, and there are a few varieties of premium cloth on offer. Other options include a center console armrest and heated front seats.
Technology
The Versa comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Bluetooth and voice recognition. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto cost extra on the base trim and are included in SV and SR trims. Other options include an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety
Crash-test data for the Versa is incomplete, though it’s fared well in the tests conducted thus far. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2024 Versa the highest “Good” rating in two tests out of the typical six. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2024 Versa an overall rating of five out of five stars. Standard safety tech is impressive, particularly for the price point: Nissan includes automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning on the base Versa. Options include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Pricing and Release Date
The 2024 Nissan Versa is available now. As of this writing, Nissan lists pricing for the Versa starting at an MSRP of $16,690 for the base S with the manual transmission and $18,360 with the CVT. The SV starts at $19,980, and the SR starts at $20,700. Nissan adds a destination charge of $1,140 to these prices.
