What’s New for the 2024 Honda Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R carries into 2024 with no changes. This high-performance variant of the practical, value-oriented, yet fun-to-drive Civic seems expensive at first, but it more than justifies its price point considering it’s got only a couple of direct rivals. The Civic lineup incorporates a range of body styles, but the Type R stays true to its roots by sticking with the hatchback.

Design

The Civic Type R is available exclusively as a hatchback, which, to be fair, is the best-looking body style of the Civic lineup anyway. It stands out even more thanks to a body kit that exaggerates its proportions, along with big front air intakes, dual rear spoilers, a triple-outlet exhaust, and red badging. With 20-inch alloy wheels, it’s clear it’s not your typical sport hatch.

Powertrain

The 2024 Civic Type R comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine rated for 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Those are impressive figures, both for an engine that small and a car this small. The Type R also gets a six-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive (FWD), selectable driving modes, a limited-slip differential, and a suspension system that uses adaptive dampers for a fantastically stable feel. Fuel economy checks in at a surprisingly thrifty 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Interior

The Civic Type R has a minimalist, yet sporty vibe inside. Front racing seats, dressed in red and black faux suede, come standard, and the back bench seats two. Other details, like the aluminum shift knob, reflect the car’s sporty nature, as does as exclusive badging. On a practical note, the Civic Type R has an impressive 24.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

Technology

The 2024 Civic Type R comes standard with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display that incorporates wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, a navigation system, and a 12-speaker audio system. A performance data logger system also comes standard. The Civic Type R isn’t available with any significant technology upgrades.

Safety

The Civic Type R isn’t crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is typical for a high-performance vehicle that sells in low numbers. However, the car does incorporate standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and road-departure mitigation under the Honda Sensing banner, as well as a reversing camera, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-sign recognition.

Pricing and Release Date

The 2024 Honda Civic Type R is on sale now. As of this writing, Honda lists pricing starting at $44,795. That’s expensive for a Civic, but reasonable for a small sports car from a mainstream brand. For options, there’s an interior package that adds illuminated door sills, a leather shift knob, and a faux suede-wrapped steering wheel ($950), and there's also a Performance package, with a carbon-fiber rear wing and 19-inch forged wheels ($5,350).
