What’s New for the 2024 BMW X6

This year, BMW gives the fastback-inspired X6 some subtle exterior updates, and the higher-performance M50i trim is renamed M60i. The bigger news is the addition of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to the base xDrive40i trim, which results in a serious bump to horsepower and torque and adds a couple miles per gallon to EPA fuel economy ratings.

Design

The BMW X6 lineup gets revised exterior styling for 2024, though the coupe-like shape remains its primary characteristic and the updates are rather subtle. The raked rear roofline is eye-catching, though it decreases practicality by shaving away rear headroom and cargo space. Options include 20-, 21-, and 22-inch alloy wheel designs.

Powertrain

The base BMW X6, the xDrive40i, gets upgraded this year with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in addition to the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. That increases output to 375 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.

The M60i boasts a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine rated for 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive AWD system come standard on both the xDrive40i and M60i, while the latter also features an adaptive sport suspension system and BMW's M Sport exhaust and brakes.

The xDrive40i earns EPA ratings of 23 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined—an improvement over last year thanks to the mild-hybrid update. The M60i returns 17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Both require premium fuel.

Interior

The 2024 BMW X6 accommodates five occupants across its two rows, though it’s not particularly spacious in terms of passenger room or cargo capacity. The X6’s coupe-like rear roofline accommodates just 27.4 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats.

BMW equips the X6 with ambient lighting, remote keyless entry, synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, driver’s seat memory functions, and a panoramic moonroof. Options include a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, heated front seats, and ventilated and massaging front seats with 20-way power adjustments.

Technology

The 2024 BMW X6 comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system that can also be controlled by a center console-mounted rotary dial. Other tech features include a digital instrument display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 10-speaker audio system. Options include wireless device charging, a WiFi hotspot, and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo with 20 speakers.

Safety

The X6 features a competitive list of standard safety features including: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic-sign recognition.

Options include a 360-degree parking camera system, adaptive cruise control, reverse automatic emergency braking, a head-up display, and a park-assist system.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2024 BMW X6 the highest score of “Good” in the two crash tests administered, though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had not released safety ratings for the 2024 X6 at the time of publication.
